A compilation of four ringforts (otherwise known as fairyforts, rath, dún, lios)
Ballycatteen fort
The ancient fort of Ballycatten has triple ramparts, saw many a battle and it was at this ancient spot that the Vikings were first defeated in a pitch battle by the Munster men in AD 910. It was excavated in 1941-2 by Séan P. Ó Ríordáin and P.J. Hartnett (1943, 1-43). The excavation produced evidence for palisade of wooden posts inside and which are approximately concentric with the inner bank. They noted that the causewayed entrance to the south east was 'protected by a series of gates', with the end of palisade giving further protection to entrance.
