Looking past the obvious crimes against lore, worldbuilding, and plot consistency, the thing that strikes me the most is that all the characters speak in generic cringeworthy metaphors. It comes across as a pretentious teenager's idea of profound dialogue, and there's basically no regard for each character's -- well, character and cultural background. They all speak in the same manner. The writers obviously have no idea how to write believable fantasy dialogue (or perhaps dialogue in general).

After trying to publish 3 novels let me just tell you, the industry WANTS the bland shit. I know loads of young people who write amazingly fresh stories with compelling characters, and we're all struggling to get it out there. Criticism includes that books MUST be short, simple, and easy to follow. Wish me luck because after 2 years of being told "young people won't read something with historical accuracy", I'm close to just uploading 500k words as a webnovel because at least that gets it out there. This industry is straight up brain rot, and young artists, be it painters, musicians and writers, are really struggling to get the novel and fresh things out there. @LegendaryDorkKnight

It's even worse than that because in season 1, Sauron expresses a genuine desire to put the life of evil behind him. I know in Tolkien's lore, he is evil itself and would never give up evil because it's his nature, but the SHOW contradicts that so I'm pulling from what they showed us. Sauron wants to settle in Numenor and become a smith and even resists Strong Woman™ when she tries to persuade him to fight alongside her for the fate of the Southlands. He tells her no multiple times and says he's happy to become a smith and settle down. She circumvents him by getting the queen regent to order him to help by LYING and making up a story in her own mind about him being the rightful king of the Southlands even though he TOLD HER EXPLICITLY that he took the trinket off a dead man. So he goes off to battle and gets a taste for power again and even gets an appetite for revenge when he confronts Adar. All of this causes him to relapse into the old Sauron and become evil again. Season 2 is essentially the writers' attempt to retcon Strong Woman™ being a villain to try and make it seem like Halbrand was acting shady all along. tl;dr Strong Woman™ is like that one "friend" who convinces a recovering alcoholic to drink again, leading them to causing a fatal 5-car accident on the highway.
@TheSuperappelflap
13 күн бұрын
@@LegendaryDorkKnight No, the intro to the first episode of season 2 literally confirms that Strong Woman is the only reason he goes back to his evil ways. If she hadnt jumped off a boat and randomly met him in the middle of the ocean he wouldve probably just ended up chilling in Numenor. This is the canon of the show lmao.
LOTR and Dune contrast each other so perfectly, if I may oversimplify: Frank Herbert thrived in a moral grey area, but Tolkien had a great divide between pure good and evil. In both stories, it worked well. This show is like a shit fan fiction "what if" these authors switched places and it would make both stories suck.. as we see here. (and I hate giving the showrunners as much credit as this implies, but you get my point. There's no "Frank Herbert" writing this garbage)

Most fan fiction writers think "I write, therefore I'm an author and writer". At one time being a writer or author meant your work was at least accepted by a publisher, but now it just means you self-publish on Amazon or post on Discord and have other sweaty people who can't get a date IRL lusting after some characters. So yeah, this is like a Galadriel/Sauron fan fic because those people also love to ship the least likely characters as well.

@@HotaruGlaive I do dabble in writing fan fiction, but it's mostly a 'oh my God, i hated this aspect of the story, it made no sense to me , I want to reimagine it.' Or 'I like that part, I want to expand on it.' It's an autistic, low-maintenance pasttime that gives me a bit of joy, nothing serious (and which I only engage in if I really care about the work. Which are like ... one or two.). And since English is my second language, writing such stuff in English helps expand my vocabulary and learn how to phrase stuff properly ... or at least, less awkwardly. NEVER EVER would I dare call myself a writer. And I wouldn't dream of publishing my amateurish BS anywhere. I also don't read fan fiction very much, but I avoid fandoms like they are nuclear accident sites. Too much reeing, shilling, and shipping wars ... it sucks the enjoyment right out of it for me. I don't say this as a 'noT aLl faN fICtIoN writErS', just to underline your point how insulting and ridiculous it is for those numbskulls who 'publish' their 'works' into a circlejerking discord/website to call themselves authors. In regards to shipping, yeah. At best, it's a 'dude, those two are so incompatible and have ZERO chemistry, why would you fantasise them being together? ' That sounds exhausting, constantly blocking out the obvious cues that they have NOTHING romantic between them, or frantically clinging to any interaction that shows the characters standing a centimetre closer to each other than normal. Guess I'm lazy, but well-written canon couples (with meaningful romance that serves the story) are so much more enjoyable than constantly trying to justify your oNe tRUe paIrINg. Also, not every story needs romance. I find it bizarre coupling characters in everything you see, and I say this who is a sucker for a good love story. (Lack of Y-chromosome, can't help it.) I heard that some actual authors have retconned their characters into siblings to stop the shipping and bring the focus back onto that what matters, the plot, the themes ... without success, of course. I find that so sad that authors, who certainly care deeply about their work, find themselves forced to change something to stop people defiling it... or stop people ATTACKING them online for not including their totes valid gay romance between those two mortal enemies...
@petriew2018

A key element of why both work is because the writers created their world to support their stories. Middle Earth is a fairly black and white realm where Tolkiens ideas of good and evil are tangible forces of nature, woven into the fabric of the world building from the very start. Likewise Herbert created a universe of stagnation and treachery to fit his narrative This is why you basically can't tell the story this show it trying to tell, because the world of Tolkien doesn't function if good and evil are 'subjective', it simply does not fit. Likewise if you tried to tell a fairly standard heroes journey tale within Dune, it would quickly hit a brick wall because that universe is engineered to make such things impossible. You have to break the foundations of either setting to tell these stories

At the end of Peter Jackson’s last Hobbit movie, accompanying the credits, the audience was treated to a gallery of gorgeous sketches of landscapes, architecture, characters and costumes. These included design drawings of the ring, exquisitely rendered, Elven inscriptions and all, faithful to Tolkien’s description of this awesome yet far from ornate object at the center of an epic tale. By contrast, Amazon brings us Elven “rings of power” which look like they emerged from a plastic egg that came out of a gumball machine. Perhaps they were ordered from a cosplay accessory vender on Amazon. The word “cheesy” barely scratches the surface. First, Halibrand has to inform the Elve’s master metal-smith that metals can be alloyed, something he has obviously never heard of. Then Dumblebimbobor , needing only the finest Elven gold and silver to mix with his irreplaceable mithril sample, smelts Galadriel’s brother’s knife, and the steel blade melts at the same temperature as the precious metals of the handle. We now have to assume that the finest Elven blades were made from inferior brittle carbon steel (which still melts at a higher temperature than soft metals), while the swords of the men from the Southland have been alloyed with nickel as Halibrand mentioned, so as to make them tough and hold an edge when tempered. Clearly the men from the Southland were superior metallurgists to the primitive, less sophisticated Elves. Who knew(?), surely not Tolkien. The mthril, so touchy and unstable that it has already blown up the furnace once, is carefully added to the melt by pulling the lump of unrefined ore out of a pouch and tossing it in the crucible, no drying or preheating, with no ill effect. The pour is not carried to the mold to keep it as hot and liquid as possible, but flows down a split stream along long, curving troughs for some reason. We see the tongs of the craftsman twisting silver wires to form one of the rings, a process which has nothing to do with smelting as wires are drawn, not cast. Not too surprising then that the silver wire ring is a different color than the two super-bowl rings, as it is obviously made from a different (non-magical) alloy. Although the chunky zircon on top does have a certain Disney princess “charm” all its own. Critics have pointed out that the Amazon writers don't have copyrights to Gandalf, Hobbits, etc. Hence the nameless "not Gandalf" wizard and proto-hobbit “club-foots” or what have you. I'm guessing the ring designs are also copyrighted. I'm glad those guys from Jackson’s crew are still working and I wonder if they are cringing like much of the audience is.

oh lord is that a question.... you want to lose your mind laughing? go actually look up who Rotten Tomatoes considers a professional critic just to pad these numbers. like, we're talking actual hobby bloggers here, some of who actually get away with reviewing it twice. It's hilarious how desperate Amazon has gotten to hide this embarrassment.
@buu88553
13 күн бұрын
1. Rotten tomatoes doesn't seem to be as trustworthy as it used to be. It is likely accepting payments to manipulate the numbers by filtering critics based on goal rating. 2. The film companies have filtered out genuine film reviewers by not providing early review copies to critics who have criticised their tentpoles in the past. So, new critics don't want to risk giving a negative review for fear of being blacklisted which would be a career-ender more or less. 3. Even the critics who should have no fear, like those from the big media houses, are not as good as they used to be. Just like scriptwriters and filmmakers are no longer as good as they used to be, actually. I am starting to think this whole generation, my generation, sucks. The next generation is no better. Shall we put our hopes on the next next generation, boys and girls still in high school right now? Probably not. Maybe the ones that are in preschool right now will be better. I wonder if our generation got ruined by the arrival of smart phones and social media at the wrong time in our growth. 4. Rotten tomatoes ratings for TV shows sucked worse than those for films to begin with. TV show critics were tiers below film critics even a decade ago. It may have got worse.

I've been sitting, watching and shaking my head. What have they done to these characters? The actual story so beautifully handles all of these concepts and events, and provides all the opportunities you could want to graft a bit of meat onto the bones if you needed to. Instead, let's jumble up and butcher the timeline, insert simplistic plot mechanisms like "Celebrimbor fell for Sauron because someone managed to ambush Elves" and then desperately try to shoehorn evil and conflict into the Three by polluting three of the most incorruptible Elves in history - Galadriel, Elrond and Gil Galad. Even the way they talk about "invading Mordor." "Let's attack from the east. Let's attack from the west." As if Mordor ever had any accessible entrance except the Morannon, other than going around the mountain range that would be the equivalent of walking from the Morannon to the Shire.

But did they also sign for the Tolkien-wannabe writer team, who don't understand his work in the slightest, nor are they even remotely capable of writing dialogue of comparable quality and/or style? Tolkien was a professor of freaking linguistics. His writing and ideas are not something that can be replicated by writers hired on a quota, and by trying, they just piss people off.

I watched a video about Rings of Power that claimed Amazon bought the rights to The Hobbit and the LOTR movies but not the actual Silmarillion book where 99.99% of the lore comes from. So, they're essentially in a position where they have to make up the entirety of the series. But they're not actually talented enough to do that so they used every trope imaginable and identity politics in place of actual storytelling and character development in the hope that the denizens of Twitter would give them money.
@gamble777888
13 күн бұрын
I believe this is innacurate. They do have the rights to the Silmarillion and ONLY Silmarillion. This is why they can't have Gandalf in the show and have to hint and wink at it, it is a guarantee that in 5 seasons they will never call the Wizard by the name Gandalf. What they have in terms of the films is distribution rights on their streaming platform but not creative/production rights. There is not and won't be a single character in this show that is not referenced in the Silmarillion.

The Game Of Thrones ending I can understand because it was good and ended like trash. But this was bad from the start, and never even seemed like it would be good. It’s like World War Z the movie vs the book. Even the author didn’t care because clearly it wasn’t his story in the movie. Nothing was tarnished or ruined, if anything it just made the original source look even greater because current writers can’t recreate that magic.
