If you have 50 ms ping you have a 100 ms delay (back and forth) on your input, which might be fine if you're playing the Sims, but it will be awful on any action genre game. I was a beta tester for Stadia like just before it released, and basically just played a tad of the Laura Croft then the start of Red Dead Redemption 2. But I'm a woman with slightly larger than average hands and that controller was wayyyy too fucking big for my hands. I submitted that feedback and was basically told "fuck you, look at all this work we put into making this controller for everyone, look at all these designs" Like I'm a fucking gamer bro, you don't think I've seen the same collection of controller design progression photos from literally every other gaming company? Everyone does that, but I can't fucking reach the center buttons without awkwardly moving my hands so that the back of my palms block the controller and holding the controller with only my fingers on this fucking thing. And I'm only able to move the thumb sticks by resting my thumbs on their edge, not the center, unless I again awkwardly hold the controller. I wasn't the only one with this complaint, most women did dads who let their kids play did, but it was ignored. Like why fucking ask for feedback if you're going to be shitty? With that and all the drama with developers like the terraria thing, it had no chance. But at least I got a free Chromecast out of it. Sadly I don't think I can sell this controller since they gave it to me before release

The reason GFN was such a success because all because of Fortnite and the appeal of playing games from your steam library anywhere anytime. Game pass has Xbox exclusives and gives you so many games for 15 dollars a month. What did stadia have? A ok controller and good ui? 1080p with free plan? I want to point out to everyone that’s saying “the lag/latency with stadia was fine, I don’t see the problem” that that is LITERALLY only cause you have a good connection. The stadia itself didn’t cause latency in games, rather the fact that everything was being streamed was. Meaning that if you end up in an area with crappy internet your stadia will lag, but if you only stay in a place with really good internet (this defeating the purpose of taking your games on the go) it’ll be fine.

@@GTXgb-gt8lz The thing is, you're entirely correct to a certain extent. Stadia WAS ahead of its time. The issue is that the concept of streaming games as a whole is kinda shit once you leave a big city where internet is really good. And it gets increasingly shit the further away you go. And even 5G ain't gonna be enough to cut it for gaming, you'd need some seriously good data to game over cell service (Which would cost serious money) and more importantly, EVERY game would need to be designed with netcoding and other such things that only multiplayer games have to deal with now, it's just a large inconvenience that I don't think many people want to deal with. At it's peak it was selling better than the SNES, and throughout that gen it was always competing directly with it. In fact it was such a big success for Sega that they tried to extend it's life with the Sega CD and the later awful 32X expansion. Now Sega Saturn, that was an absolute flop in the west, and Charlie was probably right about it having a small library (in the west). I use(d) Stadia to play Destiny 2. In my experience, if the connection was solid, the latency was way better than other cloud services I’ve used, such as GFN and Luna. The technology powering it was legitimately impressive, but it was held back by Google’s lack of commitment to any of their product ideas. IMO, if Stadia had all the initially announced features at launch and stuck to a subscription-only model like Luna, it might have been more successful.

Honestly I think Xbox might have the market now for cloud gaming as the series X is able to sustain way higher connection speeds than old gen consoles and Microsoft actually has the commitment to follow through on the release of could gaming. I have to agree for a casual use case it was pretty good. I used to play on stadia when I was at my girlfriends home since I had no console there and thus it was very convenient. It may have sucked at launch but when it released in my country (Nov 2020) it worked pretty well. It was also the only cloud gaming service for me that was playable on mobile data. Served me and friends some fun evenings at the lake drinking beer while playing Fifa or Mortal Kombat on my tablet. For hardcore gamers that have a decent PC/Console and only play at home then of course Stadia sounds like garbage. Nevertheless, of all the cloud gaming services, Stadia had the biggest potential. But Google dropped the ball on it VERY early on. The competition managed to catch up very quickly. Google had no balls to commit to it and caused it to fail.

I feel like this kind of service probably is the future for gaming, the idea that every gamer needs to fork out $1.5k for a decent rig that's only running for 3 hours per day is ridiculous. The problem is with network latency and the fact that you already need to buy some hardware to get it working it was doomed to fail from the beginning. A similar service may succeed in 40 years with a lot of edge nodes but as someone who tried it, the input lag was extremely noticeable and a massive hindrance unless you were playing a more casual single player game where it doesn't really matter so much.

@@Sein82 I mean, it’s “clickbait” in that it drives people to actually select the video, but the term has such a negative connotation to it, it’s hard to decipher what someone means when they say it. It’s not misleading of a thumbnail since there is truly a development scene for the device. Almost like saying the GameCube is dead when we are still having mods to install Raspberry Pis into them for selective booting. Not officially support, but certainly still active. I know Charlie isn’t too in the know with the retro scene and modding so it’s understandable of him to verbally react as he did. I’m mostly wanting to drive positive attention as MVG does fantastic write ups on so many things both new and old since he is a game developer. I’ve never found his videos to be “clickbait” in a bad way. Definitely attention grabbing, however.

I only had a few games and got the premiere pack for like 20 bucks, but I enjoyed my time with it. That's Google's big problem, they never give their services a fighting chance. They launch a decent bit of actually good, innovative stuff (Google Plus aside 😂), and then just refuse to actually support the products in the long term. A third grader could tell you that new products and concepts take time for people to get on board and for them to start producing dividends - that's supposed to be where having Google back it is beneficial, because they have such deep pockets that they don't need it be immediately successful. You'd also think they'd understand that while the tech industry moves relatively quickly, when you're working with other industries that don't such as telecom or console gaming, you have to adjust your timeline to theirs because that's where the bottleneck lies. I doubt I'd ever go over to Apple's ecosystem, but I swear, Google makes it so hard to be a fan of their products 😂

Saturn actually kind of killed it though. Like, if you look at the Japanese market - you had Saturn on top of the competition, or at least holding great competition to Nintendo and Sony. NEC on the other hand had the biggest "oh shit" moment when they realized that all three of those consoles were focusing on the 3rd dimension while their sequel to the PC Engine/Turbografx, the PC-FX, was only really focused on perfecting FMV tech. That's a console I always think about when talking about failed launches. They only ended up with 62 total games, with most of them being VNs, or the first person FMV fighters. There were a couple of gems on the console, but most of the better games are on other consoles. Also, the Nuon.
