The Drifters' Charlie Thomas dies aged 85
The singer died today, The New York Times has published. He was a part in the R&B Soul group in the midst of their popularity in the late 1960s.
Thomas, born in Virginia, US in 1937 He joined the band in late 1950s , following The Drifters' manager George Treadwell dismissed all of the current members following a disastrous show held at The Apollo located in Harlem, New York City.
While Thomas was singing in a band named The Five Crowns at the time, he eventually joined The Five Crowns in the end and was later able to score their first Billboard Number One hit, "Save The Last Dance For Me'. Ben E. King was as well part of The Drifters.
Then, he sang on the two or three the The Drifters' bigger hits such as 'Sweets For My Love' (1962) and 'When My Little Girl Is Smiling' (1962).Thomas left the new version that was The Drifters in 1967 but continued to play together with the rest of the Drifters family over the next couple of decades, occasionally as part of the group known as The Original Drifters but more frequently as a group with Charlie Thomas' name. Alongside other members who are part of The Original Drifters, Thomas was admitted to The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1988.
Many tributes have been posted to the late singer since reports of his passing surfaced. A few tributes were shared prior to his death the week before (seemingly on the Tuesday of January 31) However, the major news outlets not reported on his death this week.
It was reported that The Rock Hall wrote on Twitter: "Charlie Thomas' elegant voice sounded tenor assisted in bridging gospel with R&B and blues and set the foundations for the 1960s' soul music. His collaboration together with The Drifters ushered in a golden era of classic music such as 'There Goes my Baby','Sweets For My Sweet and 'When My Little Girl Is Smiling and "Save the Last Dance For Me.'"Charlie Thomas' sultry and sophisticated voice elevated the everyday moments and feelings and struck a chord with the listeners everywhere."Veteran R&B and rock'n'roll singer Gary U.S. Bonds also made a tribute to the singer. "Sadly we lost another great friend this past week, Charlie Thomas of the Drifters. Be at peace Charlie. We'll be missing you. #rocknroll #legend" the artist posted on Twitter.
Sessions musician Ivan "Funkboy" Bodley, who has performed with many bands like Sting, Elvis Costello, The Temptations, and The Drifters' Ben E. King stated: "Rest well, sweet Charlie Thomas (The Drifters) the R&R Hall of Famer and a beloved friend. A few years ago, he told me"Remember, Ivan, wherever you travel in the world you'll have Charlie Thomas with you. The words stuck for me all the time. He was absolutely right. I will always keep Charlie Thomas with me."

Was an American artist who was most famous for his work as a member of The Drifters. Thomas was singing as a member of The Five Crowns at the Apollo Theater in 1958 when George Treadwell fired his group known as The Drifters. Treadwell brought in The Five Crowns to join the newly formed Drifters.
The new Drifters debut album was the hit song from 1959 "There Goes My Baby". Charlie was the lead vocalist in two biggest 40 hit songs, "Sweets for My Sweet" and "When My Little Girl is Smiling."
Charlie Thomas was the father of Charles "Happy" Thomas Jr. and the grandfather of hip-hop producer Charlie "Bambu" Thomas.Thomas was admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 as a member with the Drifters and was awarded a Pioneer Award by the Rhythm and Blues Foundation in 1999. On May 21, 2011 at Cranston, Rhode Island, Thomas and The Drifters played in The Vintage New England Theater
Thomas passed away from cancer of the liver on January 31, 2023 at the age of 85.
