I would love to see more footage from IIHS from the 70s and 80s. For my first Christmas, my parents drove through a snowstorm from St. Louis to Detroit in my mom's 1982 Chrysler LeBaron convertible. No car seat - instead, they set up a playpen in the backseat. (It couldn't have been a big one, because that backseat was tiny!) I do remember sitting in a booster seat when I was around 5 or 6, though, so thankfully they got the idea of child safety before anything happened to me.

Thank you for such a well told anecdote. I am glad you survived those early years! My parents idea of safety in the 80's was a Plymouth Reliant. Even though I was strapped into a car seat, I am not sure how safe I'd be if we ever were in a major accident.

11:41 that's insane, I've seen the UCLA crash test research clips countless times and I've never noticed the dummy's head getting crushed by the other car's rear wheel. Ouch.

I won't lie, this particular video, narrated by Jack Palance, was genuinely terrifying the first time I watched it.
