I have this funny feeling that none of the friendly planes crashed due to battle damage.

I would imagine you were credited with the kills because you did enough damage to cause them to crash before they could return to base, rather than it crediting you at the point they waved and broke off from the fight, the game tracked them until they went down, then credited you.

Great vid and flight, Taff. My only criticism, as ever, is there's not enough of you doing RoF...realise you've got a schedule to keep but please try to do this (at least) once a week. Thanks, bud. Cheers.

I use the MS Sidewinder FF as well for my flight sims. Still love it, even though it's pretty old now. Also use the Buttkicker for added realism! You should check that out as well. Really adds immersion in games. Great video Taff!

Let me say this: No to Chivalry. There never was any. There never will be. There is only war and victory. "They are not shot down until they burn." "I call shot down only when one falls down." Manfed von Richthofen

While it is true that the whole chivalry thing of WWI air combat is highly exaggerated, there are several accounts of such actions. Although of course, the longer the war dragged on, the bloodier it became and chivalry was out the window. However I would not call this chivalry, rather saving bullets for another fight, these AI pilots are more likely to kill themselves than survive a crash landing.

I'd never heard of the 'raised arm' WWI pilot signal. Interesting wartime conventions we humans have. I guess I see it differently - if a skilled pilot went to war with my country, we'd be playing for keeps. No sense letting him live to fly another day.

This was how it ended. To begin with, the early planes were reconnaissance only, no weapons. It wasn’t uncommon to have the same pilots on opposing sides working similar routes and waving to one another as they passed the lines. By the early stages of dogfighting, it was considered desirable to shoot to disable if at all possible - most pilots shared the understanding that flying was hazardous enough without trying to actively kill one another. If you put your hand up, you were out of the fight and we’re expected reasonably to land as your plane was done for. Honour amongst the gentry after all ( don’t forget most pilots were officers and it was common for many of them all to be of “noble” birth - honour amongst gentlemen and all that) However by the end of the war, too many friends and pilots were lost on both sides. The notion of chivalry in the air died quickly once it became apparent that the it was better to kill the pilot than let him back in the sky to kill you the next day.

Interesting insights, ghostdog688. Thank you for commenting and adding the historical background. I have to say, this is one of the better replies I've gotten on KZitem. The early basis in nobility, knights, landed gentry, etc makes all the sense in the world now that you mention it.

Rusty Shackleford thanks. I know the notion of chivalry in the sky isn’t a popular one nowadays - many deny it ever happened. I believe it did at the beginning and disappear at the end. And yet there are some stories (although much fewer I grant you) that persist into ww2, so I can only assume this behaviour has some sort of historical basis from the memoirs of ww1 pilots who were “there”.

Enjoyed that, as usual. What is you opinion on the joysticks? Yes, you deserve a custom paint job if you wish. That paint job on Jasta 8 was really something!
