The sixth episode covers the events in the Eastern Göktürk Empire from 552 to 560 CE.
Were the Ancient Turks and Chinese people always at odds with each other? What difference did it make to be either part of a nomadic or a sedentary society? Are the Göktürks descendants of the Xiongnu Huns?
In Season One of RISE OF THE GOKTURKS, you have witnessed how the Ashina Dynasty under the banner of Bumin and Istemi united all Turkic peoples in Asia and climbed the political ladder to become the lords of the steppe, from Manchuria to Eastern Europe. But while Istemi, Bumin’s brother and ruler of the Western Khaganate, was adventuring along the Silk Road and in the process both defeated the White Huns and established relations with the Byzantine Empire, the rulers in the East had a more difficult time. The Rouran, once overlords of the Turks, were now prey themselves and on the run from the Göktürks. But when they tried to persuade the Northern Chinese dynasties to support them against the Khaganate, the mighty family of the Western Wei declined - and even handed the Rouran out to the Göktürks. It was the Western Wei with whom Bumin had once allied himself before rebelling against the Rouran. And while the Northern Qi helped the Rouran and tried to contain Göktürk power in the region, both the Wei and the Qi were decedents of the Tuoba clan - the ruling dynasty of the Xianbei Confederation. The Xianbei, who had been enemies of the Xiongnu Huns but also steppe people like them with Tengrist beliefs, were ruled by Turkic and Mongolic people. If the Western Wei and Northern Qi were also of Turkic and Mongolic origin, the Göktürk-Wei alliance perhaps had been more than a mere coincidence of realpolitik. And not long after Mukhan Khagan assumed power and restored order in this part of the world, danger was already looming on the horizon as the Sui Dynasty united all of China, for the first time since the legendary Han Dynasty, and used conspiracies and deceit where it hurt the Turkic people the most: inside the Ashina dynasty…
