the whole idea of "alpha males" in humans is an enormous misunderstanding weak men have adopted to signal masculinity they lack. Alpha males in other animals are not at all domineering weak-willed, socially awkward latent gays who mistreat women despite what these men think. The few species that have alphas show that in most cases alpha males are cooperative with females and "lower" ranked males and others, they do not show off agression, they are definitely not the dominant gene-deliverers and most succesful fertilizers they are imagined to be, and research shows that their genes are underrepresented rather than dominantly present, which suggests that alpha male behaviour is not a winning strategy for the individual's genes, but rather A VEHICLE TO HELP THE OTHERS propagate the less-excessive traits that are necessary for a group of animals to survive. . .

What is so funny to me is the whole alpha male conversation, as it does not exist in humans in any capacity. As a dog sitter I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen small dogs dominate over big dogs it’s actually the experience in the setting I’m doing currently as well as the sitting I just completed. Currently the small dog who dominates is about a 3 pound Chihuahua over a 100+ pound black lab. Size and appearance really have nothing to do over masculinity and/or dominance. Some of these jackasses may have an aesthetic of masculinity but they bring no intelligence, critical thinking, or empathy to the table and most likely give some pretty horrible sex.

They take it from outdated studies on wolves. But wolves don't actually have an "alpha, beta, etc" hierarchy, just familial seniority for the most part. The concept came out of a guy who studied captive wolves lol. Then he published a book on it and then requested for the publisher to stop printing them because he realized it was incorrect but they sold so well the publisher refused. 100% about dogs! With dogs it's all about posture and confidence, not size or strength. I have a tiny old boy, Jack, he's a Shih-tsu and Maltese mix small ebough to pick up with one hand, and my old roommate had a yellow lab, Nova. Jack was always the boss. Even when we took them to the dog park together, Nova always went to him for protection and direction lol. Humans do have "alphas" but definitely not the way the Manosphere likes to pretend. People like confidence. Some people prefer to lead and some don't. Some people have authority in situations that they wouldn't in others, it's a complex social phenomena and not exclusive to men. Not everyone recognizes the same kind of people as "alpha" either.

Great video, Dr. Grande, as always. It's an interesting phenomenon in terms of organized and predictable patterns of behavior. In classical religious literature, this entire dimension or sphere of behavior has been addressed with such depth because it lies at the heart of pre-modern spirituality. In Islam for example, a model of Being is provided based on a breakdown into 3 basic parts; you have the animal self, which is the lowest, then the struggling self, which is the middle and represents the conflict between the intellect and the animal self, and then the intellect, which is the highest self (although there are four more categories beyond this). The way its generally understood from the Qur'anic perspective is that it is the nature of animals to compete amongst each other in social dominance hierarchies, which are predicated on status. Status is tied to resources, so the higher your status, the more resources you get. As such, its intimately tied to our impulses. These impulses are what drive animals, so when you are consumed by your animal nature, you're operating on the same horizontal plane as animals. Now for lower animals, it makes sense because that's their nature. But for humans, we have higher consciousness, we have intellects, so the damage that can be done when the intellect has been hijacked by the animal is great. I think that what needs to be provided is an understanding of the role that social dominance hierarchies plays in human behavior. People are social animals, but one of the great mistakes of modernity has been the idea that humans, and the self as a concept, are atomized constructs disconnected from their environment. There's a lot of excellent literature on this, but the genealogy of this can be largely traced to the philosophy of individualism in the 19th century, which coincided with industrialization. A lot of subcultures have emerged during our increasingly technological age, and these subcultures are marked by their own social dominance hierarchies, status and indicators of status, and how value is dispensed through social validation. The mass shootings in the US, for instance, are a byproduct of this. What this means is that these shootings are no longer mere expressions of anger and resentment towards society, but are ritualized forms of violence that are associated with status and value within that subculture and its social dominance hierarchy. The same goes for Tate and these alpha male douche bags and their followers. He's not unique, his emergence has been built on top of the past 5 years or so of alpha male subcultural development, which as time goes by, becomes increasingly extremist. I'd be interested in your views not just from the perspective of the psychology of the individual but also in terms of social groups and identity.

Exalting oneself over others IS Narcissistic, & a sign of great insecurity, & a huge ego. But all that said - A Sigma is preferable to me anyway. There is a subset of young men out there that are mentally, emotionally and spiritually lost and are desperate for a leader to show them a way out of the existential rut that their life has become. Guys like Tate prey on these insecurities and occasionally will hit upon a grain of truth; all the more to convince these downtrodden youngsters that they have no other option to become content. In fairness, I can say from personal experience that society at large tends to not only push aside certain men of a certain age/income/mindset, but will also deceptively saddle them with being responsible for socio-political ills and events (society needs scapegoats, and young men fit virtually every 'bad guy' role convenient to any given situation). Inevitably this causes a victim mentality in young men and leads to depression and a host of other problems. I do wish this issue could have more serious consideration, but there seems to be a dismissive attitude regarding it.

@@9000Dogs I think a lot of young men are feeling that way right now. Men need to turn away from listening to the alpha male BS that instructs them to man up. The strongest thing people can do right now is develop their own agency and their own good character. Much needed change comes out of that. In order to work toward that aim, guys might need to talk to a mental health professional. This is a true show of strength. Last thing. Men probably need to stop watching and listening to content that’s making them feel angry, ostracized and judged. This is manufactured feedback-looped content that makes the content creators rich. And it’s all pretty much BS. Women aren’t the enemy. They just aren’t. Don’t make the mistake of attaching your normal human desires, emotions and understandable grievances onto some common enemy.

The whole way we socialise men is wrong. On the one hand we infantilise and indulge them, then repress them emotionally (telling them that anger is the only emotion that's allowed), and then expect them to be emotional and social punch bags whose role it is to "take one for the team". We have ended up with a lot of emotionally stunted, mixed up young men as a result.

Why are Narcissists so prevalent in today's society? How is a narcissist created? Does it have to do with childhood and parents?

It has everything to do with the lack of belief in Jesus Christ.

Are there more, or do they just have more visibility because of social media?

Because they are fun to laugh at.

It is because everyone has a loud voice on social media now. Also there is a bit of a culture push on being narcissistic in some sense
