Traveling through the untamed environment of the mountains offers the opportunity to experience beauty, challenge, and often fun. However, the mountains can also be dangerous and unforgiving. The rewards of standing on a summit or skiing steep lines must be balanced against the risks involved. To move freely and safely through such terrain requires deliberate practice, a cool head, and humility, all of which can be applied to many risky endeavors Derek DeBruin is fortunate to have spent more than a decade instructing climbing and skiing in the mountains, a passion that has taken him across the United States in search of steep rock, frigid ice, and powdery snow. After years spent on the road with this wife, Susan, they now make their home in Ogden, Utah.
Working and living in the Wasatch provides unfettered access to the mountains. Derek appreciates the ease of access, but after thousands of days spent in the untamed environment found there, he also understands the risks posed by climbing and skiing as well as the landscape itself. He devotes significant energy to managing these risks for his students and clients, his partners, and himself.
DeBruin is currently attempting to strike a balance between his work, play, and fatherhood. He instructs climbing, backcountry skiing, and hiking at Weber State University and owns Bear House Mountain Guiding with Susan. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
