My grandfather was also a Republican, and the mayor of a decent-size Spanish city, the capital of its province. When Franco came to power, he was arrested and spent years in jail. He was luckier than Lluís Companys, as my grandfather was eventually released, although for a long time it looked like he might be shot. So I can really relate to this beautiful song and the sentiments it celebrates. Rita and her mom do a fantastic job here. I've found that sometimes these guitar-voice-trombone arrangements don't completely work for me, but that's definitely not the case here -- this is super nice. Elisabeth's mastery of her instrument is as strong as ever, and Rita's voice seems to fit the song like a glove. Nice job - very touching!

I'm glad that your grandfather was one of the lucky ones. Your timeline suggests that you are of my senior generation and that some of your formative years occurred under the fascists. Is there an archived memorial (like the Holocaust Museums) to the victims of those evil days as a cautionary reminder? Fascists today gain much of their clout from indifferent middle-grounders who need to be educated as to depth of the evil involved. Take care.
@chanelops

@@garyedmondson2998 I haven't lived in Spain in a long time, so I'm not sure about the answer to your question. There is a huge & impressive memorial outside of Madrid, called El Valle de los Caídos (Valley of the Fallen), that was ostensibly supposed to be a memorial to all of the civil war's victims. But it was built by Franco, and many thought it was just a veiled way for him to contruct a giant mausoleum for himself. Despite its intended purpose, many still see it as a symbol of the Franco's abuse of power. Recently, the Spanish government had Franco's body exhumed and moved to another location, and the hope is that maybe that will return the site to its stated intent. If you're ever in the area, it's near the Escorial monastery, which is another site well worth visiting.

Lluís Companys was the President of Catalonia during 1934 and then from 1936 to 1940. He was Catalanist and Republican. He exiled after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), which was won by fascisct Francoist Spain, and then he was arrested in Nantes, France, and extradited by Nazi German authorities to the Spanish government in Madrid in early September 1940. On October 15, 1940 he was shoot by a firing squad of Guardia Civiles in Montjuïc Castle in Barcelona. Barefoot and, as they fired, he shouted 'Per Catalunya!' (For Catalonia!). Preciós, Rita i Elisabeth. Gràcies per la vostra música. Visca Catalunya lliure i mori el feixisme! I si un trist atzar m'atura i caic a terra porteu tots els meus cants i un ram de flors vermelles a qui tant he estimat. Si guanyem el combat . Companys, si coneixeu el cau de la sirena , allà enmig de la mar , jo l'aniria a veure . Però encara hi ha combat Companys, si enyoreu les primaveres lliures amb vosaltres vull anar , que per poder-les viure jo me n'he fet soldat I si un trist atzar m'atura i caic a terra porteu tots els meus cants i un ram de flors vermelles a qui tant he estimat Quan guanyem el combat." ___ APRIL 74 (English lyrics tranlation): "Companions, if you know where the white Moon sleeps , tell her I want her. But I can't go to love her because there is still combat. Companions, if you know the mermaid's lair , there in the middle of the sea, I would go see her. But there is still combat. And if a sad chance stops me and I fall to the ground bring all my songs and a bouquet of red flowers who I loved so much. If we win the combat. Companions, if you know the mermaid's lair , there in the middle of the sea, I would go see her. But there is still combat. Companions, if you miss the free springs I want to go with you, because to be able to live them I became a soldier [of the free springs] And if a sad chance stops me and I fall to the ground bring all my songs and a bouquet of red flowers who I loved so much. When we win the combat. Original lyrics and music by singer-songwriter Lluís Llach from the album "Viatge a Itaca" (1975)

While there is still fascism in Spain I don't think that hate and nationalisms should be the one dominating this powerful piece which, in my point of view, is not at all resentful or hateful. They are from Catalonia and from Spain and this extreme notion of having to choose one or the other is what is tearing our country apart (well also amazingly stupid politics in Spain and in Catalonia). Let's try to enjoy this music that and learn from the terrible things that happened to a lot of people during the fascist regime so that it doesn't happen again :)

@@miguelgilcasas3560 I agree with you in part but then on the other hand I haven’t been to Catalonia and followed and then since it is true that there is a hard-core among Spanish nationalist or I should say Castellano nationalist sorry there’s a typo there that are very racist and hateful towards The Catalan People they have radio shows they are in politicsLike the right wing and USA. And it’s very dangerous but this is a beautiful song as you say end it is as the other guy who who commented points out in memory of a Catalan leader murdered by Castillion nationalists So we can noy pretend that that’s not part of the picture
