I love the Mazda3 hatch. Have owned one for 3+ years and people always think it looks like a mini Infini FX. My 2.0L has yielded 36mpg avg so far. No complaints there. Theres lots of aftermarket bc Mazdas are more enthusiast cars than the others. I like the way the lines flow on the Cruze Hatch, but that Civic looks so bad I cant believe people buy it. That 1.5L turbo engine saved the car. Great combo of power and efficiency.

Skipping the Elantra GT Sport in this comparison is a wild oversight. As a college student shopping for a first-decade-of-my-adulthood car, I didn’t give the too-trendy Civic or the behind-the-times Mazda3 any thought, and this video has certainly not changed my opinion. I liked the Cruze because my college is 10 hours from where I live, and a Cruze or an Elantra is a good choice for a long drive like that. I would pick the Elantra, in low-power-high-comfort Limited guise, or the Elantra Sport, with a 200hp turbo 4 and a manual or optional dual clutch, over any of these any day, because it’s comfortable or sporty depending on the guise you pick but undoubtedly the highest-tech offering in the segment. And it has an option for a damn headlight upgrade. Who buys a car with halogens in 2017? (Other than the rugged or novelty cars like a 4Runner or a Mini Cooper, because you’re gonna stick driving lights on that anyway.)

They got a couple of things wrong in this video. Full Disclosure: I traded in my 2015 Mazda 3i Touring hatch for a 2017 Civic EXL Sedan First, the Mazda 3 is the most fun to drive. Period. It has more steering feel than the Civic, and you can feel it if you drive them back-to-back. Second, Honda's 1.5 Turbo engine is definitely more powerful than Mazda's 2.5. Honda underrated their 1.5t on the Civic; the Civic's 1.5t pulls hard for a normal Civic. As a total package, I like the Civic more. It's comfortable, very quiet, and has a lot of technology compared to the Mazda 3. Honda benchmarked the Audi A3 when they were designing the new Civic, and you can feel it. It's an incredibly refined package. Just my 2 cents.
@sbkpilot1
6 жыл бұрын
Mad Pistol disagree.. I cross shopped the Civic Touring and VW GTi then bought the Mazda 3, better exterior looks than the Civic which looks too garish to me, esp. the rear is horrendous, the Civic is much cheaper looking inside... in the end it's all subjective and this is just my opinion!
@dannydeleney2810
6 жыл бұрын
sbkpilot11 Well this segment is $30k max. I rather have refinements where it counts. The Mazda 3 looks more elegant, but it doesn't ride as nicely as the other two. Visual styling can't hide NVH issues. Still, to each of its own!
@madpistol
6 жыл бұрын
sbkpilot122 did I say ANYTHING about the way the interior looks? or the exterior? I agree that the Mazda looks better, but in terms of overall driving refinement, the Civic has it... hands down. I'm not saying the Mazda 3 is bad because it is a great car. I'm saying that the Civic is quieter, bigger, gets better fuel economy, is faster, easier to live with day-to-day, and is going to hold its value better than the Mazda 3. Also, the GTi is a competitor to the Civic Si, not the Touring... not sure why you cross-shopped that car. I'm saying that AS A TOTAL PACKAGE (which is what I said in my original comment), the Civic is the better car.
@dannydeleney2810

The funny thing about Mazda fans is that they will defend any imperfection about their cars under the guise of "driving dynamics". Car has worse NVH than others? "IT' PROMOTES BETTER DRIVING EXPERIENCE" Car is smaller than others? "IT'S A DRIVERS CAR" Car has durability issues underneath the sexy styling? "D R I V I N G D Y N A M I C S #1" The "zoom zoom" slogan is drilled into their heads. I swear, if this was any other brand, the flaws will be chastised for a cheap pos.

@madpistol

Awful CVT? No. Nissan has an AWFUL CVT. Honda's CVTs are actually pretty good as they feel very similar to a normal automatic.
@Suction_
6 жыл бұрын
Lets be real, all CVTs are pretty terrible. Honda's is alright at best, but it still drones and was extremely inconsistent in picking the ratios i wanted based on throttle input. Subaru did ok as trying to figure out what I wanted, but there was really no power to be had. Last Nissan CVT I drove was my friends '15 altima, and it was very boring - granted, my entire trip was on the highway.
@madpistol
6 жыл бұрын
Lets get real then... Honda's 1.5t + CVT in the Civic does 0-60 in around 6.8 seconds. That's only slightly slower than the V6 Accord from the mid 2000's. The other advantage of that 1.5 turbo motor is that it has max torque between 2k-5k RPM. That means, if you're out on the highway and you dab the throttle, the CVT changes ratio immediately and you're off like a rocket. I timed a 55-85mph run, and it took roughly 6 seconds in the Civic. A 2.5L Mazda 3 takes nearly DOUBLE that to do the same. So no... not all CVTs are terrible. The CVTs in Nissans and Subarus are terrible, and the 2015 Altima is awful. Do yourself a favor and go drive a new Civic. I bet it changes your mind about CVTs.

That was a very good review guys. I don't agree with the end result of the comparison, but I do agree with just about everything said along the way. The main reason why this is such a good review, is based on the comments at the beginning pertaining to the Honda Civic. So many people miss the boat on Honda, and what makes them so good. You summed it up perfectly by saying "they do more with less". This Civic is so good, because like many Honda's, it does more with less. If you have actually driven, or own this Civic (like I do), you know this engine punches above its weight so to speak. The other thing you said that you never hear anyone admit to, is that you prefer the cvt over the manual. I agree with that, and I think its true for this car. So many people blindly spew the "save the manual" talk for every car without actually thinking about the choice rationally. I like (some cars) with manuals, but I do think this cvt is great; especially in sport mode. I also think you made a great point regarding the Civic's tech being an odd case of too much or too little. Particularly in the sport touring trim, I think it has too much unnecessary tech and not enough of other somewhat simpler or old school stuff like a volume knob or a cd player. (Yes some cars still come with cd players in 2017). Speaking of tech, I think the reviewer of the Chevy Cruze summed up that car very well. It seems to put tech first in front of comfort and drivability. I think the Cruze would be a good car for somebody that is very tech-centric and wants to drive their smartphones so to speak, or for somebody that is an uber/lyft driver. I cant comment much at all on the Mazda, because I have never driven it. It has the largest and most powerful (naturally aspirated) engine of the 3 here, so that is a good baseline for success and long term reliability right there. The drag race was pretty close between the Honda and Mazda, but the Honda won. I would agree that it really does come down to tires. With all things being equal as far as putting on a set of performance tires on these cars, I think the Civic would fair the best all around. So in summary, as you can tell, I think the Civic is the best car out of these three. The Mazda looks like a very good car as well, and the Cruze looks nice and is a good choice for the people putting tech first. Mazdaspeed3, and Chevy Cruze SS need to happen in the near future ! Then come back and do a comparison between those two cars, and the Civic SI.

These reviewers have no consistency. Check their previous Golf vs. Civic "review".Mazda does driving right, but they don't offer nearly as much as the other two in terms of functional space and fuel economy. It's a driver centric car, but not an overall winner as a hatchback. The 2.0L is gutless; the 2.5L is excellent.I find it disingenuous when Mazda fan boys say the 3 is equivalent to German luxury. Yes, it might look stylish, but Nvh problems still plague the brand. It's style over function when you have crammed interior, poor visibility, and cheap materials (look closely). It may seem like I'm bashing the 3, but I'm just trying to point out that there's more to a car than driving dynamics. Mazda's edge in that area doesn't compensate for their deficiencies. The Civic offers 85% (conservatively speaking) of the driving dynamics, while bringing a much more comprehensive package. Again, we are comparing these cars as hatchbacks, not roadsters.

Fadic 4 I thought the same about the screen the very first time I saw it. After owning the car its the best place for the screen and doesnt look out of place anymore. The Civics info screen looks like a tablet glued onto the dash and its down lower. Hondas behind the game with their interiors.
