I can testify that, when bitten by a Piranha, you don't feel pain at first. I have owned many piranha as pets and back in 1984 I got bit on my left hand pinky finger by the first one I ever had. Luckily it was a small juvenile, about 2.5" and it only snipped out a small chunk but it was painless... until I realized it bit me and I pulled my hand from the tank, then it started stinging. I was a young teen, 14 years old, and I was being a dumbass chasing it around in the aquarium and cornered it.

As somebody who's been into the aquarium hobby for the majority of my life, who has had family members that owned tanks with red belly piranha, I can tell you those fish are some of the biggest pansies in the fish world there are. Very very rarely will they choose to go after another fish that's alive and healthy so them going after a living person is not going to happen. They will absolutely eat humans, like any other carnivore would, but not alive. The individual bites are the result of either "abnormal" behavior in the fish or defensive in nature when it comes to spawning. One overly curious and bold piranha out of the literal thousands at minimum that were there could have been testing what was there. Every species of fish (especially Characins) I've kept has exhibited something like this, where you never have a problem with the majority but every now and then you just get a 'problem child'.

Here's a tip for you. Piranha look for open flesh wounds. Blood stimulates their senses but they have a very keen sense of an open flesh wound that is what they attack. Blood even if a few minutes old changes in smell and texture. The reason they didn't attack you is the blood you used is not human and they can tell the difference between something that is alive and a potential predator, where as the meat was already dead and starting to decay. Please play with more Dolphins they love interaction :)

Me and my brothers had 4 red bellied. They were between 6"-8" long. I think Jeremy got lucky. If we didn't feed them every 4 days we had a feeding frenzy. They'd corner the minnows, which were doing their best but got chased down. It happened so quick all there was left were some scales from the fish. If you stuck your finger in the tank they'd try to get you. They were interesting to watch. It's what they do in nature.
