Grew up with a 2600 and loved River Raid. I still have my working 2600 from when I was a kid. I also run an emulator and can play River Raid on that, or on the real thing! Definitely one of the best games.

My strongest memory of River Raid is recording the Airwolf theme onto a tape cassette, looping it and listening to it as I played. It's one of those games that exemplifies the appeal of the simplicity--not the ease necessarily, as the two aren't the same--of classic vg's.

@@CantankerousDave Airwolf was a bit of an obsession for my friends and I. We bought a sidecar, attached it to a BMX bike and riveted sheet metal (which we painted to match the 'copter from the show) and plexi-glass to it. In the end it was a pretty good approximation of the Bell 222 from the show. I do remember the Blue Thunder TV series, and particularly the movie, which was much darker.

I had Megamania and my buddy Tim had River Raid, and we'd always trade them for a couple weeks at a time. Played it nearly non-stop one entire day we had a snow day at school, to the point where my mom had to literally pull me from the TV and throw me outside. I just walked over to Tim's house and we played Megamania and Moon Patrol. Ahh, to be a kid.

Remember looking at screenshots in ads in old magazines, showing the different graphics for each port, seeing games and just imagining what it'd be like to play them? I remember seeing Keystone Capers in a still in an ancient Activision ad and it looked so cool I remember just going crazy until I found a friend that had it, traded games for a week or so. Rental didn't even exist yet.

@@positivecynik I liked looking at catalogs (ads just made me mad that Atari had the worst screen shots). For some reason Atari didn't provide a new catalog for late 1982 through 1983, and Activision is the only 3rd-party one I got. At this time some instructions were even printed in B&W!

I remember this game very fondly. Now, I was born in '93, so I never grew up with an actual Atari 2600. However, when I was a kid, I remember renting a game from the video store based purely on the box art. It was Activision Anthology for the PS2. I brought it home and was absolutely enthralled with it. All these old games I had never seen before, a phenomenal menu that looked like someone's room with a console, TV, and cartridge shelf set up, and a boombox for the sound options, which included a bunch of great songs. I vividly remember River Raid as one of my absolute favorites. I would play it over and over while listening to Take on Me, Safety Dance, and We're Not Gonna Take It. I think I must have found that compilation disc at just the right age, when my imagination would fill in the gaps left by the graphics, and I absolutely loved it. Now, at 26, I have a hobby of collecting and playing Atari games, and I thank Activision Anthology and River Raid for helping me to become the retro enthusiast I am now. :)

My parents bought River Raid when I was 7, my older brother convinced me that if you got far enough eventually you entered a big enemy city where you had to destroy tanks and bunkers, then at the end you reach the enemy headquarters where you plane launches a nuclear missile and you see a huge mushroom cloud and a victory screen. He claimed he had done it "dozens of times" (all when I wasn't there, of course) and never "felt like it" when I wanted him to show me, and he'd just tell me to get better at the game and I'd make it. I still believed this was the ending well into my 20's when I finally read a description of how the game really worked on the internet.

Versions for the Atari 5200 and Atari line of 8 bit computers (actually the same port) seem to be the best and most improved - you have shooting helicopters in later stages, shooting tanks from the land and even tanks coming to the bridge.

I believe its the first game to be made by a female game programer. One of the few 2600 games that really holds up now. The Colecovision version is good as well. Activision was really great back in the day. The second game reminds me of some weird version of Zaxxon with it's altitude mechanic.

The 5200 version is superior to the 2600's, with hard-coded (and more challenging) river designs to fly through, numbered levels (divided by the bridges you shoot down), plus tanks and assault helicopters that can shoot at you. Shame the 5200 console wasn't as successful as the 2600 or 7800...

This was my absolute favorite Atari 2600 game. You're 100% correct, you play it again and again and because of the near never ending game, you just kept playing. It was always fun. Even my dad liked River Raid and he was not a big video game fan at all. Seriously, he liked Duck Hunt and River Raid, that's the end of the list. River Raid 2 looks odd and I'd imagine I'd have the same problems as you did with remembering to switch from your main weapon to torpedoes. Just as a question, did you ever try it with a Sega Genesis controller; maybe one of the other buttons would give you an easy option that way?!? The Airwolf recording idea while playing River Raid sounds like a great idea!

A nice game to play when I got it years later. Glad you mentioned the smooth controls in River Raid. I had such problem with moving the ship in Vanguard after level one, so I don't think I beat level 3. Similar problem with controls for Jungle Hunt (except on the vines, of course). Maybe too much was going on, or they were making it difficult for you?

I was pretty thankful to get a 2600 when we did, probably in '84 or thereabouts, after the VG crash so they were dirt cheap, as were carts. Dump tables of carts at the Sears Outlet store. I think I paid $5 - of my own money! - for Star Raiders. I never played River Raid, but I remember seeing it and thinking it looked a lot like Vanguard (which I owned) so I gave it a pass. I didn't even know RR 2 existed. Honestly the games look like they have very little in common, other than (sort of) graphically. RR 2 seems more like a flight sim which is in its own right quite a feat to pull off on the 2600, so I have to give props for that, but as you point out the 2600 has too few control options to really make it work.

I just counted the number of Atari 2600 games on Wikipedia for 1983, the year of the Crash: 30+ from Atari and 187 from 3rd-party vendors! Compare that with 22 vs 125 in 1982. I guess the stores should have had a sample copy for you to try out then you could order one to pick up next week, or only have one copy to sell at a time like the video store, so they didn't get stuck with inventory to either return or discount.

You're not at all wrong about River Raid II - I'll confess I was just not patient enough to try to get better at it. The first one's simplicity was so burned into my brain that I'm just used to the pick up and play functionality of the first one. I think had I had RRII when I was a kid, I'd be way more into it (like with Starmaster), but trying to force my brain to get into it 25 years post Atari 2600 peak just wasn't working. Glad you enjoyed it though - thanks for watching!

I gotta pick this up for my Atari. I also have a hot tip for vidoe quality for anyone reading htis. I had HUGE wavy interference lines on my aweosme CRT tv. So I went a bought a SHIELDED Subwoofer coax cable for $12 on amazon. That did it! my previous cable was just shitty. The coax subwoofer cable is the same wirinbg, butt buying a good shielded one they make them good and, well, shielded and this keeps oput the interferenmce. I wass blown awa, it looks perfect now. Some people wil go and do expensive av mod to fix this, but a cable is all u need. I did that and a quality 3rd party ac adapter too.

1) Hit Craigslist and find a used one, but hooking it up to a modern TV probably isn't going to work out well. I also suggest buying the Atari Flashback portable. Yes, it's by AT games, but it's decent enough, and Atari games are great to play on the go, when you don't have much time. By the way, River Raid is my favorite 2600 game, and it's a blast to play even for someone like me who grew up with SNES. It's just timeless and addictive, with a perfect gameplay that didn't need all the stuff introduced in River Raid 2
