I got notified about a recall in my Hyundai Ioniq 5. Next appointment from the dealer was 8 weeks, and for a small software update they want the car all day. Rivian is handling this right!
@chuckm260
Жыл бұрын
How many Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles were affected in the recall? Perhaps it was a much larger number of vehicles (compared to Rivian's ~15k on the road) affected leading to a longer delay to get to all those vehicles. Also, your location plays a large factor. You may be in an area with a large volume Ioniq 5 and/or a low number of Hyundai service centers. Not trying to defend Hyundai, just trying to put a little perspective out there that there may be other factors that need to be taken into consideration.

Excellent presentation, thank you. I suspect proficient DIY type owners will do it themselves. And, I suspect Rivian will probably contract with a local repair facility/person instead of having to drive to the boondocks for those owners.

It's definitely good to see Rivian addressing the recall in a timely manner. To be honest though, as Tom pointed out, there's only about 12k (actually ~15k) on the road so there's not that many to address. What will be telling is if/when they have another recall that affects a much higher number of vehicles, say 100k, how timely will they handle that? For now, a good start but the bar is not that high at this moment.

When you don’t want a nut to loosen, often they use “Locktight” on threads or two nuts with a lock washer between. More secure and a bit expensive is a nut with a cotter pin through bolt.

Seems like a missed opportunity that Rivian is not putting a witness mark after re-torquing. Tom, your R1T as well as many others I’ve seen did not even measure at the old spec. Re-torquing to 120 or 122, and then adding a witness mark would be a good quick visual if things loosen up again.

Tom, just a quick question. Is Rivian asking owners with strong social media presence to make these videos? It seems like there's an extraordinary amount of coverage for just a small recall. Not that I know of. If they asked me to do this I probably wouldn't have done it - or, at the least, said as much in the video. One thing I can say is content creators like myself are always looking for current issues/news to make content on. This topic is a pretty easy one to put together a video on quickly and push it out. Funny how that followup letter said things they knew they couldn't say in the recall, buttering you up a bit with terms like "on a small percentage of vehicles" and "out of an abundance of caution". In fact, I think Rivian is pretty well aware that the problem exists on 100% of vehicles due to the original (70 lb/ft) torque spec being too low versus the updated 120 lb/ft spec.

I decided that I would meet him at the local (15 mi from my home) EA charge location. That way he could start charging, check my truck (all in spec & now tightened to new spec) before he heads back toward S. San Francisco. He had two more to get on his way back north. He also marked the bolt/nut with a stripe. (we call that a 'torque stripe' in aviation circles). He checked to make sure it was above 20 n-m before taking the torque up to 140 n-m.

How is it that looking at the Ford Level 2 charger it's the biggest and the bulkiest of them all? Like when Ford partnered with the manufacturer to make them did they say something like hey guys we seen what's available for home Level 2 chargers on Amazon but can increase the size in all 3 dimensions so that when it's installed on customer's garage walls they have to be the most obnoxious wall charger for them to look at and take up more wall space? I get it that Ford wants the Ford name to stand out that you know what brand this is but my God when you see it next to the aftermarket chargers and how small they are, you would have to wonder if Ford wants to also have wall chargers in similar size with the Tesla Powerwall? I think some at Ford said Tesla be damned we at Ford are going to compete with you on taking up customers wall space for our Level 2 chargers and by if we have to have second biggest and bulkiest units to do it then that's what were going to do.
