Had a tour of the engine room with the second engineer as a lad in 1962. Dad was delivering crankcase oil by road tanker from the dockside. A great visit and got a day of school (for the good of my education) A most beautiful ship. Thanks for this...

Thanks for sharing! One of he best holidays of my life - 1968 Med Cruise, with my parents and elder brother. More crew than passengers ! We sat at the same table in the dining room most evenings, with the same waiter (Rafael). Some evenings I would go to the dining room for the children's sitting, after coming out of the movie theatre. One film I remember was 'Wait Until Dark' starring Audrey Hepburn - I remember thinking that she looked like my Mum, and wondered if my Mum had a secret life as an actress.... Wonderful memories. Ringo Starr's Dad was on the crew, and served us ice creams and drinks near the swimming pool - no charge - we just put it on Dad's tab lol. Great Days! 2 weeks of absolute heaven. Southampton, Lisbon, Majorca, Naples...…… I will never forget....

Thanks for uploading the Andes. Worked on it as a steward from 1961 to 1964. It was one of my greatest adventure. Tough but exiting.

I had the luck and privilege of cruising on the Andes 4 times with my parent’s and sister. It was the most amazingly experience I was about 14 years old and there is nothing like it today but they were very different times.I’ve been cruising ever since and have clocked up around 80 cruises all types of ships The old P&O lines and the Orient lines, Union Castle, the original Cunard,Norwegian America Lines,Through to Royal Caribbean,Celebrity,Crystal,Regent,Silversea,Seaborne, and many more.None can come close to the feeling of cruising on the RMS Andes.

Today is the 75th Anniversary of VE day. I can remember where I was on that day and what happened. I (aged 5 years) was on board the ship, the SS Andes travelling in a convoy, with my Mother and Brother (aged 2 years), travelling from Cape Town, South Africa to Liverpool, England. The Andes left Cape Town on 4th May 1945 and shortly afterwards Germany unconditionally surrendered to the Allies on 8 May and the UK declared Victory in Europe. Andes, with all passengers and troops on deck, fired a 21-gun salute. Andes called at Gibraltar on 16-17 May, where she joined Convoy MKF 44 to Liverpool. This included 10 troop ships, which between them carried 28,638 troops back to the UK. They were accompanied by three cargo ships and escorted by five Royal Canadian Navy River-class frigates. MKF 44 reached Liverpool on 22 May 1945.

What a beauty! Compare her to the modern day cruise-ships. It is like comparing a nymph with an appartment-building.....

When I was a teenager I used to get passes to see over Ocean Liners as often as I could. Andes was one of my favourites. Less glamorous than the huge trans-Atlantic ships but she had a special feel about her which has remained in my memory.

Hi Georg, It's very nice of you to upload this video, thank you. My name is Carmelo from Malta and a long time ago I spent 3 years on the Andes doing cruises in the Mediterranean sea and the Caribbean sea from Southampton. Among other duties it was my job to take passengers ashore in one of the foredeck launches. A certain baggage master I used to call "Jock" was in charge of these two launches.Good old times. Most appreciated video.

Andes was my first ship. I sailed in her on two cruises from Southampton July to September 1957 as a Bridge Boy. A Mediterranean cruise and the Northern Capitals cruise. I then returned to school before joining Eagle Oil and Shipping Company as a Deck Apprentice at the beginning of 1959. A year later Shell took over Eagle. Some wag wrote in the visitors book in the Seaman’s Mission on 31/12/59, at midnight the Eagle went back into its Shell. I was in San Fortunato loading at Punta Cardon. Shell had sent a Shell House Flag to be flown on 01/01/1960. I was instructed to hoist the flag at 08:00, I did as instructed. Very soon after the Third Mate took the flag down and threw it over the side, Eagle men were very loyal to the old Company,👍

Well well first time I've seen this, I joined The Andes as a cabin boy in Southampton early 1970, I remember looking up at her and thinking she was so big (at 27.000 Tons) now she would look like a tug boat next to the latest cruise ships, She was an all 1st class ship for the passengers but not for the lads I think it was 8 or 10 to a cabin !! I remember the first cruise I did I was on the Embarkation deck watching all the passengers when someone grabbed me by my collar and dragged me to the staff corridor, it was only the 1st officer who gave me a right rollicking for being in the passengers area with my blue and white striped mess jacket on and not the proper uniform, he frightened the life out of me and I never did it again ha ha. She was going to Aus the trip after I left her. thanks Georg a great Video . btw I never heard her called Andes 2

A very nice Ship. Elegant in his looking, not sutch a box like our new ships, but her time is gone. Transatlantik per flying, and cruising had to be not mutch cost.
