Extremely nostalgic with a tinge of sadness for those of us whose fathers survived the war and were transported to and from the antipodes on this remarkable vessel. For the troops, the voyage was uncomfortable due to sardine tin-like packing of men and uninteresting, often greasy food, but she always got there without either causing or suffering loss of troop lives. But sea-sickness was another matter and my dad (born the year Aquitania was launched) and was never seasick in his life, recounted the particularly harrowing passage through the Great Australian Bight when 80% of the men were struck down with sea-sickness and the all-pervasive, lingering effluvium it created in the close quarters!!

Aquitania was also scrapped on 2004, and was the last surviving four-funnelled ocean liner.Widely considered one of the most attractive ships of her time, Aquitania earned the nickname "Ship Beautiful".In her 36 years of service, Aquitania survived military duty in both world wars and was returned to passenger service after each. Aquitania's record for the longest service career of any 20th-century express liner stood until 2004.

The cruising industry changed from transportation to vacation. People traveled by sea on steam ships because they were the 747's of the day. "We've gone from elegant wooden masted ships to imposing iron new steamers so gross in size, so fast and full of gaudy luxuries that one barely is aware they are at sea at all, gone are the days of the beautiful wooden masted ships with their connection to the sea." ;) The QM2 is a deep keeled liner designed in the spirit of the old ships BTW.

Olympic class liners used powerful blowers in conjunction with several large vents; other vessels had passive systems, that required a whole lot more vents to achieve the desired effect. I rather haphazardly stumbled into that recently.. all those little vents are kinda.. interesting!

no the plans were based off the Lusitania, and Mauritania I can see why you think that. She was bigger than the olympic class ships because she was built after, and ships ships getting bigger. The Aquitania's original bridge was below the boat deck. The Aqutania was bigger than the Lusitania, and Mauritania.
@rossmcnab3058

+Saras Hajirnis Aquitania was 901 feet long. The Olympic class ships around 872 feet long meaning they were smaller. Lusitania and Mauretania were fast but could not compete with the luxury offered by White Star with RMS Olympic and so Cunard played with this idea and came up with a larger vessel than anything any British competitors could throw at it, RMS Aquitania.

You have to remember the times. Rebuilding or saving ships that were like the Titanic would be like the world of today deciding to re-build the WTC exactly as it originally stood or suddenly coveting and treasuring every building designed by Minoru Yamasaki. That may happen still 88 years from this moment. These ships were and are memorizing but just as it is impractical to hang onto old ships now, so too was it then. I agree, it is a shame, but se' live.

Actually Lusitania and Mauretania predated the Olympic-class by at least five years. They were meant to compete directly with the German lines who were dominating the Atlantic routes with their Kaiser-class. The Olympic, Titanic, and Britannic were bigger and more luxurious. That's why Aquitania looks more like the White Star ships.

Yeah, a grand piano falling through one deck to the one below it was definitely a safety hazard and this was it for Aquitania, but it is too bad that they didn't build four funnelled steam (or motor) ships after this one! At least it wasn't the pipe organ or orchestra such as the one playing the music in this video, then somebody would have been hurt or died, whereas with the piano, from what I heard, Cunard and White Star were quite lucky!

Well, today's ships are designed for a different purpose. Modern people want modern accommodation and modern safety standards. Ships today have a lot harder to make ends meet since those old ocean liners made most of their money from immigrants and a tidy sum from overseas travelers. Today almost everybody travels by plane, so ships need to have something that validates people's interest to travel with them.
