A man who realised that more than half the souls on board would perish under his command. A man who was standing on the bridge and shouting orders at his officers till the end. A man who went on a final tour of the ship to relieve the crew of their posts. A man who put others before himself, when he could have easyly gotten on a lifeboat simply by asking. A man who at the last few minutes stood at the helm of the ship and rode her to the bottom on what was supposed to be his final crossing before retirement. May he rest in peace and honour.

I beg to differ on a part of your post. My father was in the Navy, and one of the things he explained to me, was that a Captain had to go down with his ship, if he couldn’t save his crew on a sinking ship. And that rule applies to all countries around the world Captain Smith could not have easily, just gotten into a life boat. Im pretty sure the people in the lifeboat would have thrown him out, just as easily, if he had hopped into it, and called him a coward. As a ships captain; you are in charge of a ship and the well being of its crew and passengers. If your ship becomes fatally wounded, and it’s sinking is imminent, then as Captain, you are obligated to save everyone on board your ship, before saving yourself. Those are the laws of the sea.

Binoculars wouldn't have made much difference. It limits field of view. It's better to look with naked eyes to get the bigger picture. Also naked eyes adjust better to dark. Binoculars are used by officers to identify something that the lookouts spot and notify. There were 5 other pairs available with officers onboard. If it was deemed necessary they would've issued it to the lookouts.

An old fart who decided it was a good idea to go full speed ahead despite receiving warnings of icebergs in the area. He almost sank the Olympic too! When Titanic struck the iceberg he became paralyzed by fear and indecision; he failed to order his officers to put the passengers into the lifeboats; he did not adequately organize the crew; he failed to convey crucial information to his officers and crew; he sometimes gave ambiguous or impractical orders and he never gave the command to abandon ship. Why people celebrate this failure of a captain is beyond me. Glad he went down with the ship, that's the least he could do.

He ignored seven iceberg warnings from his crew and other ships, the ship's captain is responsible for his ship. The British should be ashamed of him and they know it, that's why they're trying to re-write history and make him into some kind of mythical hero. He was no hero, he was a failure of a captain who was responsible for one of the worst maritime disasters of all time. You are an idiot for refusing to accept it.

7 months prior to his final voyage as Skipper on the Titanic, he rammed into the British warship HMS Hawke. At a hearing, it was ruled his fault, but for some reason, the White Star Line refused disciplinary actions against him. Instead, they gave him command of the Titanic. He should’ve been forced to retire at the very least. He also ran some ships aground in his career.
