If you have a chance you should reach out to Vermeer and see there surface excavators! Very cool machines and built in Iowa along with almost everything else Vermeer makes!

Thank you for the full explanation of this reuse of material on the road site. The only question is what about manhole covers, water valve covers. I do Love how you say the road owner, reused the material. In my area, the MILLING is HAULED to blacktop plant, then they remake NEW blacktop. But like you say. Save running a Dump back and forth. And the Dump beds get so gummed up with blacktop on Dump trucks. Why NOT just let the MILLING machine do all that work in place, at the site of the job.

surface miners are slick, but that "no haul off" road resurfacing is sexy AF! that "cold paving" could shave so many days off major highway jobs! i really wish here in the States that we could properly improve our infrastructure enough to double highway truck weights(retired flatbed trucker here) in order to smooth out our surface transportation system, we've been severely lagging in qualified drivers!

@@rp1645 The milling contractor would have a small milling machine with a 12" head that can do the same thing the big machine can do. The only difference is the little machine can go around manholes, catch basins and value boxes, in one pass.

@@carolinafrog4365 The use of the cold in place paving trains are becoming popular because the price of oil(asphalt & diesel) is making the reuse of materials cost effective. The trucking industry would like bigger trucks, but there are people that believe bigger heavier trucks are more dangerous! When Boeing 747s came out, some people were afraid of Jumbo also! Time will tell!! I like Big Trucks!!!!

Milling machines was a great invention in road work. I use to crush asphalt and millings for future use in new roadways but in Florida, millings couldn't be used in the final surface layerof a road ,only virgin asphalt could be used for final surface layer. Millings are also great to just put on a stable surface on their own and just packed by driving on them especially when it's warm outside. And to think that we use to rip asphalt up and just throw it somewhere, usually to fill in low spots on someone's property.

why only new in FL ? Our prime provincial contractor has a slick setup that is a half block long, but goes from propane burner preheat to grinding, reconstitution with fresh tar, mixing, and conveys into the paver/spreader hopper. They close one lane to traffic while they refresh the other, like new.

@@blueman5924 I guess you don't understand that roads are paved or repaired in different ways. Do you think that everyone follows your company's ways??? LOL 😂 ...PS. I worked for The Middlesex Corp. in Florida for 15 years ,they are the highest producers of asphalt in the state of Florida.

Hands down, they make the best road mills around. Iv worked with them back in 2011 when I used to do asphalt. I’m a steel fabricator/welder by trade. In the last year I have repaired 2 of them that were leaking diesel from the fuel tank. Both wereon a corner joint where the 3/4” plates that make up the tank were welded from the factory. I did the repair for a certified John deer dealer and authorized repair shop. It was nice to be back around those machines again. They are one of a kind, and top notch in performance and efficiency!

Front dozer blades are common here and for about 6months they are paired with a wing blade. Sandpicks are used for rural or unpaved roads for the winter also. But motor graders used for maintenance usually keep the front blade year-round.

YES ran and still see my favorite. The (690JD) First Grader (JD) built, the one I ran had a front Blade. Great for a full lot with a drop off. The Farm my wife is part owner in. The Farm owner has an old (690) with front blade. The (690) had that great (T) handle for both sides of the mold board. One lever. The ( T) handles control from those great (450-C) Dozers. That was so state of the art in the front blade or mold board control on each side of the blade.

I was involved with a copper mine in the Congo that used a Vermeer surface miner for some production. They're an interesting choice and I can definitely see the appeal for sedimentary rock.
