@@jester.Gaming hello bro. I noticed something weird with vanilla cities skylines. If you build a city with only 4 lanes and 2 lanes with tight grid, it is actually better for the traffic. I have 50k pops with 81% traffic going, the only red segments are on the highway exit... I also use trams here and there so they does not interfere with the traffic, and it works sooooo good. Does not look aesthetic, though, it looks like san fran with bigger roads here and there loool

Yes it traffic totally depends on roads and if you are using your roads correctly you can get 90+ percent of traffic flow. I have arou d 80thousand citizens and my traffic flow is 93 percent sometimes 95. It all depends on roads and public transport.
@Seriously_Unserious
3 жыл бұрын
@@taimoorshah8230 Good points, however the game's auto generated lane arrows usually tend to be wonky and confuse the traffic routing AI, leading to silly things like a 3 lane road with all the traffic jammed up into a single lane that has arrows going in all directions and the other 2 lanes being ignored by the traffic, causing backups and traffic jams that should not occur if the traffic were behaving normally. TMPE allows us to take control of that and make sure the lane arrows are serving their proper functions and that the traffic can work it out and use all lanes. A 6 lane arterial road only works if the traffic actually is aware it's a 6 lane road and uses all 6 lanes. Otherwise you can end up in a candidate for a Biffa traffic fix video just from the bad lane arrows and unused lanes that triggers.

If you loved a game definitely you will do everything you can think of within that game for a long time without ever getting bored :D I've also been like that for a long time with Skyrim (since release), RF Online (since 2007), DoTA2 (since dota 1 still has only 30 heroes), The Sims 4 (since Sims 1), and Stronghold Crusader (since 2004). And C:S will also definitely going to be on my longtime favorite list. Started playing this game since Q3 2018 after spending half a year watching YT videos related to C:S, and finally decided to buy the game with all of its DLCs since last year (yes, I've tried out the pirated version for 2 whole years before buying). Edit : I've got another game to be added to my list of All-time favorites, it's the recently being awarded as "Best Game You Suck At" in Steam, aka Nioh 2 😂💀 That game, so hard yet so addicting.

You don’t actually need six lane roads all you need is that the individual lanes are able to do their own thing for example on a 4 way intersection you’d like three on the exiting side because you then have one lane for left right and forward. I never use 6 lanes I usually stick with the 4 lanes but I only ever have 3 way intersections because those let the Cars move more freely. Also roundabouts !

Great tutorial for those that need help, no doubt ! However, you seem to rely heavely on principal arterials (arterials that meet highway(s) with service or system - like interchanges ), and you did 0 standard arterial (arterial that doesn't meet highway(s), just goes under or over). Looking from 16:02 , you have an arterial that just loops around to connect 2 neighboring interchanges. There are missed opportunities to create a diagoanal connection toward the top right between the 2 principal arterials, and having, on the left, the arterial from the interchange go towards " north ", while horizontal one goes " west " Either way, that's probably intentionnal and by design anyway that you did this. So, the end result still counts as good !

It’s nice to see a road layout which to me I guess looks like it has American influence, as somebody from the UK we transition from motorway to main roads which we call A road via roundabout. And we don’t tend to use 6 lane roads. The hierarchy in the UK are local roads, B roads , A roads then Motorways which you can call M roads.

Hi Carl - I am in North America (Canada specifically) so I suppose most of my designs are loosely based off of what I've seen around where I live. I've never been to the UK so it's interesting to learn about your road terminology and design! The 6 lane roads are relatively common here on some of the major roads. Once you get into some of the older parts of the cities they are a bit less common and largely two lane roads. Thanks for leaving a comment and welcome to the channel!

Outstanding job explaining this topic. I just lost a city because my garbage trucks couldn't get around the city. This shows why mine didn't work. I tried to correct it, but only made it worse. As you said in this video, it's hard to fix once the city gets big. Look forward to more videos. Do you have any that explain how to avoid the backup from trucks loading/unloading?

Hey skess - I'm sorry to hear about your city! I've started expanding my cities very slowly and in the event that I wasn't sure about something I was doing I would make a secondary save just in case I needed to roll back to what I had before ... which has happened! Unfortunately I don't think there is a way to avoid the backup from trucks loading/unloading at commercial or industrial buildings. I find it's the worst outside of warehouses. The best thing that I've found that helps a little bit is to spread these buildings out. I don't have a lot of warehouses close together and I don't have a large commercial district. This way there is only a little traffic backup once and a while rather than a constant backup because there are lots of buildings getting deliveries. I hope this makes sense. Welcome to the channel!

It should be of important note that the way in which you zone these areas is gonna have a huge impact on traffic. Something I fell folly to quite a bit when I first started building cities is zoning too much, too soon, resulting in massive death waves and crippling traffic which would inevitably cause a mass exodus. I may have briefly been able to get over 50,000 citizens, but typically I would then lose the city and give up on it. If you treat a city like a plant that you're growing over time, it becomes a lot easier to manage.

Great video I learned a few things that help. The intersections that back up some due to traffic lights I implemented one way streets similar to alot of citys and it gave traffic a directional even flow that kept intersection traffic rolling smoothly.

Hi Erik, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment and some advice! That's a good idea. It sounds like a combination of road hierarchy and the industrial layout that I have in a previous video that uses directional traffic to keep the traffic flowing. I might have to explore this in another video when we expand to another area.

Your video(s) on Road Hierachy have greatly helped in making my cities look more realistic! One question regarding the final build (lets say at 17:15) : Is there a specific reason you did not connect 2 (or 4) local roads from the southern, old part via Bridges (or Tunnels) with local roads of your new Northern part? I sure this would increase service coverage, aid in walking even more, make Bus routes easier, all without overloading the local road network (cause Sims from the Southern part of the old Part would still take the Collector/arterial and not drive all trough Local roads)
@jester.Gaming

Hey Freakschwimmer, thanks for watching the video and leaving a comment! That's a great idea - I do have one of the 4 lane collector roads connected across the highway but I think that was about it other than pedestrian pathways. I'm trying to think back when I built it why I decided not to connect more roads. I may have been worried that the two lane local roads would be overwhelmed by the number of vehicles tracking back and forth. However, it might help alleviate some of the traffic going between the two areas by spreading it out to multiple roads. I will have to revisit it and maybe put a few in!

Hey @@jester.Gaming , thanks for replying so quickly :) I was just asking, because I usually have a few local overpasses over arterials and collectors and I was curious on your opinion on this :)

I used to have one between my industrial area and the surrounding residential area. I was starting to get a lot of trucks going through the local roads instead of back towards the collector. I think it's going go be situational if the overpasses will work well or not ... One of the good things about this game is to experiment and see if if works :D

To some extent, road hierarchy is good, but the only cities that work this way are suburban in nature. Textbook road hierarchy contributes to sprawl and spreads people out forcing your sims to use their cars instead of walking or biking. While yes, connecting local roads to your highways is not the best, connecting local roads to arterials is realistic for dense urban areas and ensures more direct routes for pedestrians and cyclists. Unless the traffic demands an arterial road with 6+ lanes, try using 4 lanes with a bike lane or bus lane instead! Putting development around transit also lessens a need for road hierarchy because it significantly reduces the number of short trips in an area. Using the Traffic Manager Presidential Edition Mod, is a great way to give your roads more functionality in denser, urban areas. Remember, some traffic can be a good thing as it discourages driving and will increase transit usage and walking/cycling. If your goal is %100 traffic flow, than textbook road hierarchy is great, but the only place you will find this in actuality is in the terrible suburban landscapes of America
@jester.Gaming

Hey Garett - thanks for leaving a comment, those are some good insights! Public transportation definitely plays a key role in making sure citizens can get to where the need and reduce traffic. Admittedly, I do not use bike paths/lanes as much as I should. I would probably plan out my city a little bit differently if I could ... I'm already thinking about the next city - there are always ways to improve! Unfortunately the terrible suburban landscape of ... Canada (probably very similar to America) is what I'm used to and know best :)

The only thing i do not agree with is the cloverleaf, because they are notoriously bad really. It might be enough, but likely will give trouble, and there are better options. But this is mostly about the road hierarchy. I am going to try a similar thing, with some cheat roads just for services, no normal cargo trucks, no cars, just services. Also zero buildings along arterial roads. And i am going to try to use as few 4 way intersections as possible, only T-junctions if i can. Yeah, i am probably not going to do well because i don't really have any experience in this yet, but one can hope and just try. Those main aterial intersections may be red, but they're working fine really. I only kind of feel like bikes are neglected :P Those pedestrian crossing might also do very well with having a bike path right next to it.
@jester.Gaming

Hey Gabi, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment - welcome to the channel! I've heard a few people say that the cloverleaf isn't great but I have yet to have any significant issues ... we'll see as the city grows! Is there a mod that allows you to restrict roads to services vehicles only? No building along arterial roads sounds like a good idea - I do see some traffic as a result of deliveries going to commercial buildings. You've got a great attitude when it comes to playing Cities: Skylines ... try it out and see what happens! :)

Ive always done pretty good with road layouts but fail to pre-plan or setup good pedestrian and public transport.. then I just try to jam it in there later hehe. Guess it has to do with where I grew up, lived, and the fact Ive almost never been on public transport in my 40+ years... so no first hand experience. Latest build I have done a better job and have some pub going to a major university district. but buses are my bane. The roads they chose to route is driving me batty and Im about to put them all in the landfill and use some other method. Great layout, I see now that I need to just hold off on zoning and think about all the transport and services first.

I have found that you can have every tile have one four lane road in a ring with a dedicated bus route and everything branching from that be residential and I have no traffic issues 150,000 population 6 tiles filled, and a metro connecting each district (trains underground for industry, and a bike path between districts as cycling superhighway)

Great build, the only issue I have are the tunnels. It is quite unrealistic to have so many tunnels for small local roads and pedestrian walkways, bridges are better if you want to minimize intersections. Especially for walkways, as pedestrian tunnels are very unsafe.

You should use more roundabouts. I know that you people in the US don't like them but they're everywhere in Europe and they're proven to be more effective than intersections. Don't use them in the middle of your collector roads (people live there) but try to use them on local roads and when coming of the highway.

Thanks for the feedback Danny! I'm not quite in the US but close enough ... roundabouts are becoming more commonplace here but there are very few compared to stop sign / light controlled intersections. That sounds like a good plan ShaunOnlyPlays YT! You've got to be careful early on with your money and definitely can't build an intricate round network right away. Traffic is so low at the beginning you can get away with something that doesn't have proper hierarchy. Welcome to the channel! :)

Nice video, I usually completely delete traffic lights, but maybe I should plug these in more with Arterials. It looks better the way you build it. I like your way of combining grids with curved roads. One thing of information I miss is how high level of buildings you have in this section. Since higher level of buildings also means higher density of traffic. Where they all upgraded?
@jester.Gaming
3 жыл бұрын
Hey jezeijl, thank you for taking the time to leave a comment! Traffic lights do work fairly well. There is still occasionally a little bit of a backup as it goes through the light cycle but that is to be expected. The vast majority of the time any backup of cars is cleared after one cycle of the lights. I'm not sure what level the buildings were at the end of this particular episode (most were probably above 3 or higher) but everything is currently maximum level. Traffic is working fairly well and hovering around 85% at about 80k population. The road layout is still working well but I think I need to work on my public transportation a little bit to get a few more percentage points! I hope this answers your question, welcome to the channel!

Is there a hierarchy for buildings that coincide with the hierarchy of the traffic or can you just place zone density and other specialized buildings as you please on whatever road type that allows it?
@jester.Gaming
2 жыл бұрын
Hey Theidrin, great question! Zones/buildings that have higher traffic should be placed along roads that can support it. For example the commercial buildings have both citizens visiting them for shopping and trucks delivering goods so I place them along arterial/collector roads. Residential buildings (even high density) are typically placed along 2 lane local roads since they usually have the least amount of traffic. I hope this answers your question, welcome to the channel!

I's no problem at all! I am currently having some traffic issues around one of my cargo train terminals.The location that I have it in requires returning vehicles to turn left onto the correct street - traffic is backing up at the intersection where they have to do this. Taking a look at it, all of my commercial buildings in the high density area were relying on a single cargo train terminal to import their goods to sell which lead to a high volume of traffic around that one terminal. As an experiment I put in a second terminal a little ways away from the first which split cargo trains between the two ... traffic problems have all but disappeared. You can use the routes info view panel to take a look at a road and see what kind of traffic you have and where everyone is going to try and figure out what changes you could make to reduce traffic!
