I have fond memories of discovering this game at an arcade located across the street from my high school back in 1987. I loved the background music, especially when it plays the Russian Dance from the Nutcracker, because I was in Marching Band and we played a Nutcracker medley that included that. It also plays the Sabre Dance, William Tell Overature, and the Flight of the Bumblebee.

Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner were voiced in this game by Earl Vickers. Quote: "From 1982 to 1988, Earl Vickers worked at Atari Corporation as an engineer and programmer. During those six years, Vickers developed many audio technologies including audio compression and decompression, multi-channel playback, and composite sine modeling synthesis for several of Atari's arcade games. In addition to audio engineering, Vickers also created sound effects for several games, recorded speech for several, and even composed music for a few." Source: vgmpf.com/Wiki/index.php/Earl_Vickers

I really wanted to like this game back in the day. It has a really good cartoony look and feel which suggests that it should be a lot of fun to play. Unfortunately, the actual game play is so frustrating that it always left me thinking I had been cheated out of a quarter.

you aren't the only one. I was psyched to play this the first time I saw it, but after spending about a dollar on it (that is to say, four games), I got fed up with the ill controls and unfair aspects of the game and moved on to something a bit more fair -- the Stargate (Defender II) machine right next to Road Runner.

I used to play this game quite a bit at the mall back in the day. The controls are indeed pretty horrendous, but it seems that every video of this game has some playing god awful on it. It may very well be MAME to blame as I can tell by the person playing that he's using the keyboard, which is not at all recommended for this game, the old stand up at least had an 8 way stick which made things a bit easier. Ultimately though, this game was a horrid quarter muncher and never saw much play.

I remember seeing this in the arcade as a kid. I was amazed a video game could feature cartoon characters (This was before I'd seen Dragon's Lair). The thought of really playing a Road Runner cartoon? I managed to convince my mother to let me have a go. Even at the age of 5 I was furious of how awkward the game was to play. But thank you for showing this vid :)

Now that you mention it, the graphics do look as good as a cartoon like Dragon's Lair. I saw this game back in 1987, and I think that computers still couldn't display full-motion video, which is the reason that Dragon's Lair was done with a computer controlling a laser disc player.
@williamcrowe2576

It was going to be a laserdisc game sort of like Dragon's Lair, but Atari figured the cartoon clips would distract from the gameplay.

Since Warner Bros. has already acquired Midway Games after it's bankruptcy, Road Runner would've been a clever addition to Midway Arcade Origins, released by WB Games, since titles by Atari Games, including Gauntlet, Marble Madness and Toobin', were featured in the Midway Treasures and Origins compilations. Atari Inc. on the other hand is totally different since they released Pong, Asteroids and Centipede which have no relation to Midway.

@@petrusamp7792 Not really. The Atari Games Corporation that gave us this and "Gauntlet" and the Atari that gave us "Pong" are two totally different companies. What was left of Atari Games was assumed by Midway (the Midway that gave us "Mortal Kombat") and then later Warner Bros.

"Controls are bad" because you are playing with a keyboard and not a proper "hall effect" joystick as found on the arcade machine.
@DragonsLairProject
6 жыл бұрын
Regarding the ambiguous bad controls comment in the description - If you mean that the controls are bad on your PC / emulator, then you're correct; your controls suck. The arcade game on the other hand uses an analog joystick allowing smoothness and precision of maneuverability. NOT an 8-way stick as someone else commented. I've recently seen a Road Runner arcade game where some schmuck installed an 8-way joystick and destroyed its playability, like in this video, so, to anyone who encounters an arcade game that no longer has its analog joystick, be aware that it's not correct.

The gameplay just showed Atari back in the day was a quarter muncher indeed.I also played this game in the arcade (if I didn't mention earlier) at the time (the game seems to have different speeds for the Road Runner depending on how hard you push the joystick). Couldn't get far wasn't teh unfair stages,but the stupid person who was operating it decided to up the dam game to 50 cents per continue.:(

The controls are way over-sensitive on MAME, I think you have to set the sensitivity levels for the joystick, if you can tweak them just right, it should be a lot easier to play but it takes a hell of a lot of trial, error and different combinations. I've never managed to get it quite right, it either ends up too slow or too fast! Was the arcade the same? I remember playing the Atari ST version & that was a lot easier to control.
@pjw5328
9 жыл бұрын
jimmybisk I loved this game in the arcade and was actually pretty good at it, but unfortunately it's just one of those games that's nearly unplayable in emulation. The arcade's joystick was something called a "hall effect" joystick, and it controlled not only your direction (and you could move basically in 360 degrees, rather than the usual 8 or 64 fixed directions), but also your speed. The further you moved the joystick away from center, the faster you'd go. It was similar to the modern analog joysticks on PS3/PS4 controllers, but the feel was actually even more refined, because the hall effect used magnetic sensors to read the joystick's movements rather than the usual switches or contacts, so all of the motions were extremely smooth, whether you were changing speeds or changing directions. Even if you modded a Playstation or XBox controller to work with MAME, you still wouldn't be able to fully replicate that.
