The arctic tundra is one of the most unforgiving places in the world. We experienced this first hand with getting stranded in the middle of nowhere on a couple occasions on our way to the north. But it is also one of the most incredible and inspiring places I've been in my life. The people see the world and life differently then most, and this was very enlightening for me.
The arctic peoples, once totally nomadic, are now largely sedentary or seminomadic. Hunting, fishing, reindeer herding, and indigenous arts and crafts are the chief activities. The arctic peoples are slowly being incorporated into the society of the country in which they are located.
We drove up the Dempster Highway from Dawson City, Yukon to the arctic community of Inuvik, Northwest Territories. We were given special permission to drive the new Mackenzie Valley Highway from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk (our final destination in the north - to swim in the Arctic Ocean). The road will be completed in 2018, but we were lucky enough to have a patrol vehicle escort us all the way so we could accomplish our arctic goal! The locals were very surprised we had been allowed access as they haven't even been granted permission to drive it. We felt very lucky to be able to do this.
We experienced many things like muktuk (beluga whale blubber and skin) and got to learn a lot about the traditions and culture about the Gwich'in and Inuvialuit peoples.
This is a place I will never forget. What a road trip!
