Things to know about Vrindavan and Mathura:
Brajbhoomi, the land where Lord Krishna was born, straddles the River Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh. At its centre lies the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where his name continues to resonate and, many say, his flute still resounds in every bylane and fallen leaf. For the pious, the devout ambience of the riverbank cities is reason enough, but Mathura and Vrindavan have a lot to offer for any traveller, with delicious food, pastoral beauty and ancient legends. Here is our quick guide for 48 hours in these twin sacred cities.
A 50km drive from Agra airport, Mathura also lies three hours by road from Delhi, and a half-hour drive from Vrindavan. The best season to visit is in early winter when the temperature is ideal for a soak in the river as well as a trek up the hill. You can time your visit around Hindu festivals such as Janmashtami, when Krishna’s birth is celebrated (this year, it falls on 18 August). This year, Holi falls on 19 March, when the streets of Mathura will come alive with colour and cheer. In the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon nearby, Holi is a week-long celebration. Women dress up as gopis (milkmaids) and playfully drive off men with sticks, in a recreation of the way Radha and the other gopis drove off Krishna and his friends when they came to Barsana to play the festival of colour.
History of Mathura and Vrindavan:
Dating its history back to approximately 5000 years ago, the city of Mathura was first ruled by the king of the Kushan Dynasty during the first century CE. However, in the second century, it came under the power of Buddhists and Jains. Later, in the year 1018-19, the city was robbed by Mahmud of Ghazni. Again, from 1500 to 1757, it had to face the attacks of many empires and was demolished at least 4 times.
There was a time when Mathura had nothing but darkness. But the resurgent Hindu movement helped this city to come back into the light and the focus was completely shifted to it. With an aim to bring back the tale of Lord Krishna, the Hindu rulers along with other people took the responsibility of building the temples dedicated to Lord Krishna and ghats on their shoulders. Slowly and steadily, everything happened the way it was planned and the city started receiving an inflow of tourists.
