The truly CRAZY thing about Akane's drumming...she is loose (incoming drum geeking). Instead of gripping the sticks hard at the bottom and using forearm action, she's choking up at the balance point and floating the sticks between her thumb and first two fingers (notice how her pinky and ring fingers barely touch the sticks), flicking her wrists to get that momentum. That's why she constantly looks like her sticks are about to fly away! YET, she is faster on her fills than most drummers I've seen, to the point that I have no idea how she manages to keep such tight control. Frikin Amazing!!

As for recommendations: "Puzzle" (either the acoustic version with just Kanami and Saiki or the full band version) does a great job showcasing Saiki's vocals; a bit light of instrumental tone though. "Wonderland" is also fantastic for vocals and really shows off Miku's harmonies with Saiki. But with a heavier instrumental tone.

Aaah, there it is :) As much as I love the drum solo (which I can hear like a melody in my head which is actually something I usually associate with Bonham) - what gets me every time is how they re-enter the song from there with the little powerful bridge before the solo. Mindblowing! As a next song I think Blooming MV is a very good choice because there is a lot going on musically (and it's a great song!) and I have a soft spot for Wonderland from the Feb2020 show. Very different, somewhat softer song but also a lot going on and with Saiki's vocals really shining. Also: how much fun are they having on stage!

Freedom is a lighter song that is one of the band's favorites. They've inserted various extra intros and bridges into it over the years, including one where Saiki sang the bridge while standing in the crowd and Miku had to sing the entire final verse. Since they use it as a fun fan-engagement song, it gets less lights and pyro stuff, but a lot more of the band moving around the stage screwing with each other, and hyping up the crowd.

That said, you NEED to check out another all female band called THE WARNING! Three teenage sisters from Mexico that are the first EVER Mexican Band signed directly to a US Rock Label. They just signed to Republic/Lava Records! As a roadie, you will appreciate a couple of things. They are/were a totally independent band that are funded solely by Patreon and Kickstarter. Next, they independently produced an EP and two full albums (The second is a concept album) before the oldest was 18 years old!! Lastly, The drummer is sponsored by Sabian Cymbals and Vic Firth sticks, The guitarist is sponsored by Orange Amps, Manson Guitar Works and Rick Toone/ Luthier Guitars (And plays A Spearfish, and is a featured artist on their website) and the Bass player is the YOUNGEST EVER Spector bass artist (13 years old), is featured on the Spector website, and Spector just made her a custom 5-string, and she is also an orange sponsored artist. They are a classic Power Trio that blends 70s, 80s and 90s Rock sounds with a modern twist and a female touch! Here is the latest live performance from their basement studio last month. Funny that you say "Freedom" is your "least favorite song" and you "still love it" because I use to say that there is only one song from Band-Maid that I don't like, and I love it! 😅 ("Ai to Jonetsu no Matador") "Freedom" as become one of my fav moments in their shows, it always has this aura of good time, and lot's of interaction between them and the audience. My fav "Freedom" performance however is the on in Zepp Tokyo 2018... there is a lot going on and it culminates with Saiki climbing the fence that holds the crowd and is almost engulfed by hands, there are a couple o road crew guys holding her by her belt so she won't fall while singing the chorus... it's such a epic moment... then she climbs off and we don't see her till the end of the song - Miku Kubato sings Saiki's part and the song that comes right after is "REAL EXISTENCE" (another pearl...it's so good so good so good) and more things happen - Saiki appears barefoot (did she lost her shoes in that climbing?) and in the song she starts a little approach and little dance with MISA (always barefoot) ... this Zepp Tokyo 2018 is also the show where "Onset" was taken from... Anyway, just subscribed your channel and been watching your Band-Maid reactions and really enjoying it, so glad I clicked the button! Keep'em coming! OH, since I'm here writting all this stuff I might as well recommend another one right? So, my recommendation for next Band-Maid song is..... wait for it.... It's funny what you say about this being your least favourite so far and yet still brilliant. I consider myself to be a pretty solid fan and do find myself feeling ambivalent at times to some songs more than others, even album to album, but then I hear it all again and go "yeah, that's fabulous".. lol. I've come to the conclusion that this happens to me because, very impartially and critically in spite of my fandom, the band has a body of material that constantly has their stamp and is constantly to a certain quality or above. For me (and I put Queen in this category) any band that can do that invariably becomes an overwhelming entity to take in, and so my mind has a habit of blurring the lines to make favourite choices. For sure some are, as you say, more to the individual taste than not, but I think Band Maid have fallen into that same Queen-esque category for me.

Management was still insisting on outside composers at the time Freedom was written, in this case Ichiro Iguchi, although Miku did get to write the lyrics on this. Maybe you can check out Band-Maid's alter-ego 'Band-Maiko'? Notwithstanding pandemics, Band-Maid started doing special 'April Fool's' video surprises for their fans to release on April 1st each yeah. Band-Maiko is where they do a MV dressed in traditional Maiko (Geisha in training) cloths and do a song with traditional instrument sounds added in the mix. (and sung in a local dialect from the town famous for Geishas.) This song, Gion-Cho is one such example: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1qOJ2mulhod-lqg It's even more special in that it was when Kanami first started making the other girls work a bit harder. Kanami at that time was doing all the arrangements and doing a lot of the 'lead/fill/riff' type playing. In this song, she arranged it so she could lay back more and do mostly rhythm and let the vocals do more of the work, and the bass & drums do most of the fill & riff playing ... some awesome smooth bass playing and some great Taiko drum style playing by MISA and Akane and great vocals & harmony!! Band-Maiko MVs are amazing musical and cinematic treats for their fans ... well worth watching!

Next stop on Japan music tour would be Wagakki Band with "Homura/Akatsuki no ito" live or "Senbonzakura" live. Good fun.

Enjoyed your analysis, as always, but I don't believe Jimmy Page said she was like "the reincarnation of Bonzo". I've seen that line used before, on the original reddit post and there were a lot of people who thought this was blown out of proportion. There's a tweet from Akane, where the picture comes from twitter.com/achi_bandmaid/status/798122824997093376 . Everything else that's said, I can totally believe, but the reincarnation line is probably a little over the top. And not because of her skill but because I don't think Jimmy Page would say something like that when it comes to his deceased friend.

Yeah the reincarnation thing has taken on a life of it's own. Like a You Tube comments section version of the telephone game.

That’s why I said “supposedly”.

@@TankTheTech Yeah, wasn't a dig at you at all. Just wanted to say that I read that rumor too, and I don't believe he'd say something like that. There was nothing wrong with what you said, I should have maybe phrased my comment differently, sorry. Maybe replace the comma with a period and delete the but in my first sentence.

@@ANDOR- Their conversation was private and no one heard what was said between them. A fan claimed on the homepage website he overheard Jimmy say something to that effect but it never was substantiated. Akane said on the homepage that "Mr. Jimmy Page-San offered me many words of encouragement and I promised him l would do my very best to live up to his kind words." End quote.

As always, a very enjoyable and informative reaction - if you want to stick with the live stuff, try Play, Real Existance, or Wonderland - or their MV's for Blooming, Don't Let Me Down (with it's not-so-innocent lyrics), Rinne, and at some point you definitely have to go back to their 2014 breakout hit "Thrill" - made when they were all in their early 20's, still trying to figure out how to be rock stars, but definitely showing signs of the greatness to come... and if we're all lucky we'll see 2 of their best live performances available once again - Moratorium and Puzzle (also the acoustic version of Puzzle to show a completely different side of the band)

For the next BM reaction it will be good, and fun, to add the little instrument song Hard Wash (0:57).. The list for the next songs... I suggest Real Existence MV or Live or Both... RINNE MV... The Dragon Cries MV... Play Live

It's not a live track but Blooming is worth a listen. Lots of tonal variation and a killer mid/bridge. As a bonus for you Tank, the gear is easier to pick out. Cheers!
