I have to say it. If there were an old vs new by Nostalgia Critic, I think he would give a point to the remake for having a better Loomis. While Donald Pleasence is good, he seems to just be a Van Helsing stereotype in the original. In the remake, you get more insight into what it was like being Michael's doctor and he was a lot more sympathetic. This is why I wish Rob had kept the alternate ending in his remake. Because there's a moment where Loomis really reaches out to Michael and it works.

@@rabbitholeguy the only ugly was the beginning with his step-father, sister and bully(well, those custodians in the original vr but that is rare to see so.. Doesn't count now I guess.) The rest was fine. Laurie and her friends were likeable. The adoptive parents were the same way. The Sheriff is also likeable and not ugly. TONS of characters that aren't what you described. At all. Michael Myers also fits that "Shape" description. Tyler mane is a GIANT and is huge. You'd shit your pants in a heartbeat. Also the grunts Michael does in the remake when he's stabbing that lady in the hospital.. The movie is great. Definitely exceeds the original by a lot. More streamlined and digestible. More fears, and thrills. The new remakes are garbage. They're less horror and more action. They're barely written to make sense, like they had 100 writers to make 1 page each without working together on those pages lol. Halloween Kills is for sure the worst in the franchise to date. Considering we have Resurrection... It's kinda fucked to think someone went out of their way to make a WORSE Halloween movie than Resurrection.

My biggest issue with Zombie's Halloween was the unnecessary, often comically deranged and fucked up background he created for Michael Myers. It killed the mystique of the character and almost made you say "Well, no wonder he turned out the way he did." Think about it: what's more terrifying: 1) Zombie's vision of MM 2) A supposedly normal child in suburbia who, inexplicably, possesses depths of unimaginable evil. Who has no reason to be a killer, but simply is. No remorse, no empathy, not even a motive. Just walking death. I'd go with two, but that's just my humble opinion.

I think the biggest issue with Rob Zombie's Halloween was that we never needed Michael Myers to have a backstory. And to me it actually works against his character. The whole spookiness of Michael Myers from the original Halloween was that he was just this evil person and there was really no reason why he was evil. Kind of similar to how in the Dark Knight we don't know the Joker's back story. And we are better off not knowing it. We just know that he's a Madman who wants to create chaos. He just wants to watch the world burn. Which is basically the same thing that Michael Myers was. So when you introduce a backstory it diminishes the Cornerstone thing that makes that character so great.

I agree. The original Michael Myers could withstand bullets. Or die and resurrect himself or whatever. There was something supernatural about him. The Rob Zombie version diminished the character, like you said, and turned him into a kid with problems. Zombie used poverty and a poor upbringing as a way to explain evil when in fact evil can lurk anywhere with even the best family. That's what John Carpenter got right. Also, at the end of part 2, Zombie used a switch-a-roo with UFO's or something to make Laurie evil. I just thought that was dumb.
@random-nz7dy

@@serpentsepia6638 yep. And you could have made alterations to the story line without changing Michael. As a fan of the original universal monsters, and the work Rick Baker has done, I loved the newest take on the Wolfman. The visuals and cinematography were great in RZ version of halloween. Could have been wonderful if he cleaned up the trashy language and characters a little more. The 2007 halloween felt like a trashy beat for beat remake studio grab with just a little added back story for Myers. I actually enjoyed RZ's Halloween 2 more than the first. The second one felt more original and up his alley. I really liked the psychological aftermath deep dive into the characters and how realistic trauma is for some after those events.

I watched his Halloween for the first time a week ago and thought it was: A) Too long B) Had nasty people doing nasty things for no reason than to be nasty (In other words they didn't add to the plot/mythos, just upped the run time) C) Michael didn't seem to be going back for his sister until the movie randomly decided that's what he was doing. How did he know who she was or how to find her? D) Michael messing with his victims felt out of place. The horror of Michael is that he just kills. It's not a game. It's not like he has a goal or can be reasoned with. He's the fucking terminator. He doesn't get satisfaction from taunting and toying with prey. He kills, then moves on, then kills, then moves on. He doesn't put on sheets to pretend to be someone's BF, string up victims to put pumpkins on their heads, etc. E) The kills never felt fun or had much gore. The camera didn't focus on the actual kill as much as the movie relied on fake blood afterwards, with maybe one or two exceptions. The only thing I liked was Michael in the hospital as a child with the masks and when Michael as an adult would start wrecking shit, tearing down doors and walls and ceilings just going apeshit. Overall it was a 5/10 Meh movie that I'll gladly never watch again.

I love the halloween franchise as a whole but I do agree with most of your points about his remake. The only one I can argue with is the last one where you say Michael doesnt mess with his victims but that scheet scene was a call back to the original where Michael did where a bed sheet and killed that girls bf so I mean michale can be theatrical with his kills lol
@intense79nick
3 жыл бұрын
@@williammelendez2568 Funny you point that out because I had completely forgot about that scene but I rewatched the original in 4k for the first time and saw that and went "oh I'm dumb" lol but it still feels like a weird decision even for Carpenter to do in the original but thats just me.
@standarddef8769

It's too long because the studio had him reshoot the ending. The movie originally ends with Myers killed by police in front of the house. They added on reshoots of Myers getting up and going after Laurie again. I agree it's too long and it's because of the studio wanting that protracted ending in my opinion.
@intense79nick
3 жыл бұрын
@@JayceKeller728 Yeah I recently rewatched it since I picked up the 4k steelbook and it reminded me they did that. I will admit I'm a big dumb dumb. Not sure why but I always thought of Michael as how I describe him in the original comment, just a ruthless killing psychopath who has no reason to mess with his victims but that's just my take on what he should be? I think I took an issue with Rob's version of the sheet scene because Michael is comically much larger and it's obviously not her BF and she's like "stop messing around" thinking it's him lol. I literally laughed at the expectation that we're to believe that she believes that's her BF. It's not as cheesily done or obvious in the original in my opinion.

The first one humanized Michael Myers and explored his making in a way that made it scarier. The idea of a homicidal maniac disguised as your neighbor's kid is more plausible, which seeds the imagination of paranoid irrational fear fantasies. It's a side effect of parenting. To enhance it with an appetite for psychologically penetrating horror films is something I doubt many regular people could hang with.
