Duvall as Augustus McCrae in Lonesome Dove was one of the greatest character portrayals of all time! Lonesome Dove is absolutely in my opinion the greatness western movie/series ever made; splendid behavior, splendid series.

Weird that the presenter ended this in under 20 minutes. A few years ago, while having coffee with a couple of friends, Duval was waiting outside a Starbucks rather early on a Sunday morning. This was outside on their veranda... I said to him "We'll pretend we don't know who you are if you would like to come and sit with us." He came over and sat down. What a nice man. None of us talked about movies, and he didn't talk at all about himself. We talked about ghost towns we knew in New Mexico, and nice places in general. We later figured out that he was looking for locations to shoot in. He stayed with us for about 45 minutes. One of the most interesting conversations I have had. Duval is a genuinely good fellow. As he left, I broke the rule slightly by thanking him for all his great performances. He smiled and just said "Thank you." Then he got into a big black Suburban and rode off into the morning. I haven't been all that impressed with most of the actors I have met in my long life. Robert Duval though - there's a man!

Yes, he and Tommy Lee Jones, we're able to pull out their best by acting opposite each other. Duvall was the perfect foil to Jones's straight man, so to speak. 🙂💕. " You're one of a kind Gus," Call said sighing. "We'll all miss you" "Even you Woodrow?" Augustus asked. " Yes, me," Call said. Even at the end Gus is managing to make Call admit something. What a irritating character/friend Gus is.🤗😍💕👍🏽

Have to disagree with you there. He didn't like The Searchers, considered to be one of the greatest westerns of all time. I think it comes down to his dislike of Duke Wayne. There was a well publicized arguement between them when Wayne was an old man while filming True Grit.

I was not a Western fan until I saw Lonesome Dove. My grandpa told me about it and I was against it at first because it was 6 hours and I wasnt a Western fan but I had an extended summer break for a week from school and it was streaming on Netflix and I decided to try it, and I was hooked. Amazing acting, cinematography, writing everything. I was just hooked. I then loved other Westerns such as the Spaghetti Westerns, Unforgiven, High Plains Drifter and more. I have to watch Lonesome Dove once a year. It is that good. I own it on Blu Ray and it looks absolutely amazing.

I was able to tell Robert Duvall in person that "I loved him in Lonesome Dove. And that it is my favorite movie". He told me "It is his favorite movie too." While we were working in a movie together. I had also been in a mini -series with 3 of the other cast members from Lonesome Dove that Won 4 of the 7 Emmy's it was nominated for. Still some of the best memories in 45 films. I've only been in awe of an actor twice, Robert Duvall, and George Clooney in Out Of Sight. Although I've lost track of the number of big stars I've had the fortune to work with ,those were the only two I was in awe of.

Dearest Robert Duvall I had the great honor of seeing your first directing project with the Nebraska family. I loved the title "We're Not the Jet Set." The young man that you documented could not believe that I did not know who you were. I never had time to go to the movies. A few years after I viewed it, I broke my leg and went through Steven King medical Hell. During my recovery, I got to get caught up on movies. I fell in love with *Lonesome Dove* My next door neighbor, at the time, was Yakima Canutt's son. I told him how much that movie touched my heart and soul. He sent me to the library to get "The Goodnight Loving Trail" a book by Ralph Compton. Hungry to learn more, I found "Charles Goodnight Cowman and Plainsman" by J Evetts Haley. When I was in Texas, I had the honor and privilege to sit at the campfire with Oliver Loving's great-grandson. He told me about Bose Ichard, and the implicit trust that Charlie Goodnight and Bose carried through a lifetime with his business and personal dealings. I think maybe Bruce Springsteen and Clarence Clemmons might have had that type of trust. "Lonesome Dove" made my stay in Texas more real than I ever dreamed. The first time I saw the Trinity River I felt a little awestruck. Just knowing that those people and the Comanche's once claimed that territory as home gave me a whole new respect for The West. I believe that somewhere in the shooting of that movie, Charlie Goodnight and Oliver Lovings spirits were approvingly looking on.

Personally, I can't think of a film this man hasn't done an amazing job in, he doesn't make "bad movies." To Kill a Mockingbird, The Godfather, Days of Thunder, Lonesome Dove, Assassination Tango, Open Range, Gone in 60 Seconds, Broken Trail, Secondhand Lions, I could go on. Lonesome Dove will ALWAYS be my top pick, but I think he's "just got it." Not only that, but he's not one of those actors whose all about the money & fame or has let it go to his head. He's a normal human being who likes to make good movies, some one you could sit down, and have a cup of coffee with, chat about whats going on in the world today, his favorite foods/movies/music, etc. I'd love to be able to do that if given the opportunity. Thank you Mr. Duvall for who you are and what you do!!

I kind of agree with Duvall on the Searchers. I only wish they had spent more time talking about it so I would know all of his thoughts on that movie. I am in my '60's and grew up loving westerns and almost all John Wayne films. One of the things I have come to dislike about those westerns from back then is that they were morality plays predicated on the idea of an absolute line between right and wrong. As we get older, and hopefully smarter, it should become clear that there is a lot of gray area between absolutes. Westerns are comfortable and I still enjoy them. But they are fiction.

Oh how I loved "Lonesome Dove" and yet, my lord, how I immensely loved "The Searchers" as well, and I am so surprised that Duvall hated it. Sort of a shock to me, yet there is no accounting for such surprises, I guess. I actually have read the novel, "The Searchers" by Alan LeMay three times, and must say that the film is infinitely better, little touches of comic relief here and there by the fabulous John Ford, whereas the novel is so relentlessly grim it almost hurts to read it, despite its greatness otherwise. "Lonesome Dove" is also very rich in comic relief, which I feel was needed, what with some of the nastiest, scariest villains ever filmed, such Blue Duck, the nearly bullet proof half breed Comanchero, a more modern manifestation and reflection of "The Searchers" war chief, Scar, of the Wayanokee Comanches

He will always be Gus McCrae to me. His best line in the movie was when he smashed the bartenders face on the bar and said "I've no patience for a surly bartender" I probably didn't get the quote exactly right, but something to that effect. Also I found out that his character was based somewhat on the life of Oliver Loving, a Texas cattleman. The part where Gus and Pee Eye are attacked by Comanches and Gus gets an arrow in the leg that eventually kills him, was exactly what happened to Oliver Loving except he was shot in the wrist and died because his arm wasn't amputated before the gangrene spread. Woodrow Call's best line was "I won't tolerate rude behavior". After he took a branding iron to the army scout that commandeered Newt's horse.

Forgive me, but while Robert Duvall is a fine actor, great even. Because whereas I am moved by his character Augustus in Lonesome Dove, I can't say I find him that appealing in this interview. Just my opinion.😞😒😊😊

You are absolutely right about Robert Duvall in interview!! He wasn't that exciting. I suppose he can have day off from being Augustus. 😀 Yet, he is, an actor by profession, who doesn't get his real life persona and on screen personas confused. That's what made him so good as Augustus, because he could reach into that seemingly ordinary bag of Robert Duval and present a fine performance. I imagine women were swooning all over the world when they saw Duval's McCrea. I love my wife, yet even I fell in love with Duval's character in Lonesome Dove. How can you love a fictional character? You may well ask. Prior to seeing Duval's performance, I had Loved John Wayne's performance of Uncle Ethan in the Searchers. That was from 8 yoa. So you understand I've always loved western characters. Perhaps I'm not so different to you in that way? 👍🏽🤝🤔💕🤗

BEST three TV series, "I Claudius", "Search for the Nile" especially with Kenneth Haigh as the magnificent, swash buckling, man of the Victorian Era, greatest master swordsman, speaker of 30 languages, immense scholar of erotica and especially Muslim erotic, British spy, self professed world's greatest expert on sex, first non Muslim ever to make it into and then OUT of Mecca, Alive, First White man to discover Lake Tanganyika, etc. etc.... and then of course there is the best series of all, LONESOME DOVE, with incredibly layered characters of both Gustavus McClay and Woodrow Call, the two softest hearted ...deep down ...softest hearted ULTIMATE badassers EVER ON FILM. But one point... referring to The Searchers THAT duvall says he did not like well, the Laurie Jorgenson of THE SEARCHERS was a kind of forerunner of our wonderful Laurie played by Diane Lane in Lonsome Dove, not by professon, of course, but because John Ford, I am sure picked IT, and then Lonesome dove in homage for because of his Laurie... the mighty part of the Searchers movie SCORE , "Lorena", which Lonesome Dove's Laurie's real name is, and , the piano player early in the film, NIffy or some such name, plays on the keys so heatbreakingly none other than LORENA, right after we first meet Jasper, and "Lorena" was THE unisversal sad lament of all confederate soldiers, lonesome, war weary, exhausted, heart sick. And slightly heart sick, too, I am just nuts enough to be toward Gus's love for those 2 little pigs, I just know he snuck some buiscuit to, at times, though he'd never admit it, dispite his so humane affection for them. Never seen the like in ANY film. NOR have I EVER seen on film so PERFECT a rendition of what they call in the world's most beautiul IMO, and that would be OLD NORSE, and Captain Call was what in Old Norse was called a an unstopable man under that special FIT called ´Berserksgangr´
