In his book "Dance Macabre," Steven King states that he thought that most of Howards work was abysmal. But that the Conan stories give off an eldritch fire and says that at his best, Howard was the Thomas Wolfe of fantasy. I don't agree with this statement, but I do agree that he was the Thomas Wolfe of fantasy. I reread this story recently and was amazed by it. He goes even further than Lovecraft and describes the horror that Lovecraft would only hint at. Especially at what could be under the mountain. Love your rendition of this work. I look for forward to your other readings.

It's times like this I'm glad I never really took Stephen King seriously as a writer. Never fell for the hype. As the other posters have said, he can't compare to the pulp masters who forged the Cthulhu Mythos.

Yes, there is a whole "Cthulhu Mythos" started by a few writes from the early days of the Weird Tales Magazine. Howard and Lovecraft were the first to mention books like the Necronomicon and the Unaussprächlichen Culten by von Junzt. Especially Howard was a born writer and story teller. Glad you like the stories.

I wonder if all the fake academia in the beginning was Howard poking fun at HP’s love of fake academia, the more convoluted the better. The two of them had wildly different world views but respected each other’s work.

@@scottmitchell1974 Nice, is there anything that tributes to REH in Cross Plains TX? I don't expect a statue, but maybe a plague or something? He would have been so proud knowing that Conan is a hero on the silver screen, and Solomon Kane features too in a Film. Enjoy your days in his hometown. Is cannabis legal in the lone star state? Here we have „coffee-shops" where you can get indeed a cup of coffee, but their main trade is selling Weed and Hasj. It's weekend and I will raise a glass in honor of REH. @@scottmitchell1974 Good to hear, the man deserves to be honored in his hometown. And that they made his house into a museum is marvelous. He deserves so much more, he almost singlehandedly created what we call now "Sword and Sorcery". A genre I like very much too, though my favorite genre is anything that fits in the Cthulhu Mythos. I wish someone would use the character of "Leban Shrewsbury" from the "Trail of Cthulhu" stories, by August Derleth. Such an interesting person with his long white hair, and dark 🕶️ glasses with side pieces so no one would be able to see his non existing eyes. And I wouldn't mind a taste of his home made Mede too with it's mind altering effects. I hope you had a wonderful day and enjoyed yourself. All the best from my little Country; the Netherlands. (P.S. I hope you keep me up to date concerning the Mythos) thanks for all the info; Roland

As far as I know there are only four Conrad and Kirowan stories: Dig Me No Grave, Children of the Night,,The Dwellers Under the Tomb and The Haunter of the Ring. But the stories do belong to the so called Cthulhu Mythos.
@nomanchaudhry8727

Like Roland said, there are only 4 "Conrad & Kirowan" stories but Howard's writings are a little confusing to pinpoint sometimes. For example he has the Steve Costigan stories which are unconnected to the Steve Costigan in Skull Face and Taverel Manor, and that "Taverel" is not related to the Taverel in Children of the Night. Further, as we all know, Phoenix on the Sword was originally a Kull story, that was rejected, so he renamed the character to be Conan. In the story People of the Dark, there is a Conan, but not the Cimmerian. There was also a red gems in the stories; Fire of Asshurbanipal, Tower of the Elephant, and Hour of the Dragon; all unrelated. In the long run, just about all of Howard's works exist in the same world. So yee, I'd say it's safe to say this would be Conrad & Kirowan adjacent.
@jamescampbell39
4 жыл бұрын
@@nomanchaudhry8727, I always thought the thing on the roof was a singular story with Conrad as the narrator since references are made to his fascination with book collecting as Conrad in the Conrad & Kirowan tales.

Especially the "Trail of Cthulhu" by August Derleth, there the main character is Professor Shrewsbury, he is the protagonist in all five stories.
