The beauty about Zeppelin they were NEVER worried about being pitch perfect or hitting the note. It was all about the emotion and the feel of the music. And where the music takes you. This song is Zeppelin at its most soulful.

I like the emotion that Robert Plant puts into his singing. I wouldn't want it perfectly on pitch. It's like the difference between a paint by numbers painting and a real oil painting. One might be perfect but it's unsatisfying.

Right in the proverbials. I believe this is from Zep 3. Plant held the world hostage for years with his fluid cords. In his haunting 'strictly blues' endeavors with Zep , Plants emotive forays are the reason these particular blues songs were must listens. He was at an age where nothing was impossible and he had members in the group that,at that point in their lives, were going through the same phase. Seeing him years later he wouldn't have been able to do these acrobatics but he still listened to the music and emoted to keep me in tears for most of his show. Those were special years. They were a special band. And they made these soaring blues epics part of their own signature. I'd be remiss if I did not mention Steve Marriott. Thanks for making this relevant to a generation lost in technology that we never would have an inkling that emotion is what music is all about. Not the latest dance move or plug-in. Heartfelt thanks Fil and guest. Sincerely, David Olson

Bonham's influence should also be considered. It is easy to take drummers for granted but Bonham intervenes like no other drummer not merely providing structure but changing the nature of the songs. All in all Led Zep were like the University professors of Rock who created a sound of pure essence that was unique.

Loving this, hearing Chris and Fil analyzing the song is like a masterclass in musicianship and singing. Definitely dynamics are one of the things that really sets apart the older genres of music from current music. The change in pace gives instruments and the music room to breath and increases the impact of crescendos. So much of today’s music is compressed to the point where you’re assaulted by a constant volume of music that has no room for nuance or dynamics.

I wish there was a way that I could give 1,000,000 + thumbs up. Zeppelin is my all time favorite band as well as each member being my all time favorite singer, guitarist, bassist & drummer. When I listen to them I feel all the emotions that you talk about especially Plant’s singing & Page’s guitar playing off each other. I try to explain this to people but I don’t think anybody has ever really known what I was trying to convey & they usually just want to move on to other subjects. It often leaves me feeling like a weirdo but you two have put into words so easily what I have such a hard time saying. Thank you for this analysis so much, I don’t feel so alone anymore.

Both Plant and Page were improvisers of the highest order. They could go tit for tat. And in a minor blues setting they were on a much higher level as a band then most. Good review!

Props for producing the L Zep analysis videos that overrode the copyright claim, and were released. Interesting the 7 sec limit, caused a segment by segment dissection of this performance, resulting in a darn good explanation of R P's unusual vocal style. Must mention a joint analysis from both a vocalist and guitarist perspective made for a unique analysis by itself.

@Wings of Pegasus...What I've always been curious about is Robert Plants unique ability every now and then to sing in a pitch slightly above the melody created by the rest of the band and it still sounds perfect. It's as if he's singing in first harmony instead of on the standard melody pitch and to me that's astonishing. It could be that Plant is singing in a minor discord to complement a major chord from guitar. It's so nuanced and natural that it's barely distinguished because it fits so well. I can't think of another rock singer who does this. As you guys aid, Plant is acting in the roll of second guitar line to Page and Page loops around the vocal with his own harmonies to complement Robert if he needs to sing phrases as straight melody. It's most obvious on the song 'Friends' from Led Zep 3 kzitem.info/news/bejne/jpqCv59_s4NmaGk

Wow, a really interesting notice from Chris: Plant plays his voice like an instrument. I think many of the best singers do just that. They 'send' things to be sang to their automatic, reliable intrument/machine, something that knows how to do it -- always ok.

If you watch the interview where page , plant and jpj talk about their reunion concert with Jason Bonham they touched on the things you 2 were saying and as a whole it was good but Jason was an infant and they all agreed that they couldn't tell Jason let's do this or that song like we did in 75 or another year because he wouldn't know what they were talking about ... it amazing that there memories of different concerts they played songs differently but the outcome was the same , both of you were spot on , on this . Supposedly Plant had vocal chord surgery in 1973 to have polyps or nodules removed and there was a noticeable change thereafter in his singing that was clearly evident especially during the Presence album and beyond. In his later years especially now Plant's voice is a bit odd, even in his regular speaking voice..
