Redford is one of those actors that seemed to enhance other actor's peformances. For all his stardom, he appears to be a generous type of guy. He not only had no problem sharing screen time with other stars, but had great off screen friendships with them: Natalie Wood, Paul Newman, Barbra Streisand, Dustin Hoffman....All of them shine specially bright with him.

The truth of the matter is, we don't know any of these people, and what they're really like; they could well be cold and awful. That being written, YES; you can also infer, by their friendships (quoted by Fer) and their activities (at Sundance, which Carol reminded us of) that there beats a beating heart in at least some of these people, and that in all likelihood Redford's a good guy. Personally, I'm a VERY private person, someone of a recluse, so I'm very sympathetic when a person admits they don't want to be inundated by mobs of strangers. Yet in spite of that supposed attitude, Redford's done a lot of good for the industry and the nation too, I shouldn't wonder.

Respect for Redford. Poignant memories. She chose him for that role, because fundamentally she relied on shared core values and industry insight. Trust. @@JazzKeyboardist1 Robert Redford, to be perfectly honest, isn't exactly a patient, endearing man. He is famous for the callous way he has always treated his fans...and pretty much anyone whom he isn't required to deal with professionally. I have always wondered if that's the real reason that he didn't do more directing, since IMHO he is vastly more talented in his directorial skills than Clint Eastwood who has enjoyed huge successful as a director. I don't know much about Robert Redford except for recognising his name and I think he was very handsome :) I really appreciate how much he seemed to genuinely care about Natalie and invest time in her, especially considering how tough and rebellious he seemed, and weirdly didn't seem to think much of the industry, despite being such a big name. Our little town took a lot of pride in that moment and the few town folks that are left sure have a lot of memories and a few home movies of that time, it's a shame that with such a all star cast that it wasn't all that successful. I loved her in WSS and Gypsy. She was so tangible and human in her characterizations. For example, her lines at the end of Gypsy (after Rose's Turn ) where Gypsy declares her independence and freedom from Rose , yet is happy to share with Rose and not abandon her. In a mother daughter relationship there's this love / hate thing most of us men can't fathom! Knowing how stage managed and controlled Natalie was by her mother adds to the poignancy of that final scene with Rosiland Russell. Also in "Beyond Daisy Clover" the relationship between Daisy and her mother (Ruth Gordon ) exemplified how love is linked to sacrifice, where Daisy's success meant irrevocably losing her mother - with the loss of this connection and her childhood memories being a choice Daisy had to make to have fame or success in the world; Daisy Clover showed different side of the mother /daughter dynamic , but one to which many could relate. Her grief upon losing her mother was one reason why Daisy blew her big career to smithereens and in the end refused to sell her soul . Look at her life , actually , it wasn't all about image for Natalie , her family depended on her, and like Daisy Clover she walked away for while . She wouldn't sell her soul (family ) for fame. This is stuff that make Natalie so human and relatable to me. Those kind of fiction to real life synchronicities are part of all movie stars' mystique! It's very mysterious and often for many , comes connected to fate and tragedy .. nothing to do with career longevity or professional talent While some say she was miscast in these roles, she was a true "movie star" and surely it was, in part , her name and star quality assured that the premieres of these films were big events for the masses. Who would come out for Carol Lawrence or even remember who she is 50 years after her death? It is however the charisma of great film stars like Natalie and Redford that helps make the best of their movies "classic". Whatever quality a 'star' possesses must be archetypal and identifiable. Natalie was a spunky girl next door type, naive and youthful, yet one senses in her a great capacity for caring , love, and nurturing. So I think she hit a mark with young women of that era , especially in her young adult roles, for she embodied the struggles many young woman face then pre- ERA, pre Roe v. Wade, etc These Western women were largely traditional , conservative but awakening to new options : personal sexual and political freedom. Again, generational current Natalie Wood played out in her life and film work. Note that "Bob,Carol, Ted , Alice", her last big movie star role before retirement was thematically focused on gender equity and sexual liberation. So she played a role in birthing a new way of womanhood in the world. Quite an achievement for early feminism , but she would not have called it that! When she left to have her family and raise her children she lived in her truth. Her image was a glamorous everywoman , one was traditional but also evolving . It's tragic that her life ended so suddenly, she left behind her children and other family alongside her film career where she had begun to be cast in roles , like Anastasia, that had greater meaning to her. She would have always found acting work though as she matured .
