I was a student and teacher under GKR from 2004-2007 in the south of the UK. I was naturally very good at it and progressed quickly. It soon became apparent that the whole organization was built to make money for a select few people at the top. I couldn't recommend GKR as a reputable karate school but I do want to make it clear that there are many good people at the bottom of the pyramid, working for free and they care deeply about their students and the martial art itself, just like I did. Best wishes to all.

Iv'e just passed my 1st Dan in Wado Karate and competed in many national and regional competitions over the past 3 years. If I was to start doing this style me and many others at my club would be multiple world champions. To all who look to take up GKR, I seriously recommend looking at other karate styles and the way of teaching as this is a complete load of rubbish. People train years and years to get their black belt but you can become a black belt in a matter of months and have your own class at a green belt with GKR. As a true lover of the martial arts, I respect all types of Karate but I'm finding it hard to from watching this.

not quiet true... it takes a min 4 years doing 4-5 classes a week for a black belt. - most get it in 5 or 6 years. You also do not get your own class at green belt. You can be nominated to become a Sempai (student instructor, requires a 2 month course) you help teach 1 class a week. you are also put with white belts to help them learn the basic punches and blocks.

I was a student of GKR for many years. Firstly I won't comment on the business model (which doesn't gel with me at all), and will try to keep my comments to my experience of training with the club. Pros 1. I think in many ways GKR have helped many. I may not have started on my martial arts journey without that knock on the door. GKR is out there pushing the value of martial arts and how it may help individuals and help their children's development. Can you show me a club that does that much promotion for Karate? 2. In my area there are a wealth of classes to choose from typically operating from school halls which are very accessible. That means that in my area on any night of the week someone could generally find a class within 15km. It's also very accessible for families and kids. If classes are not accessible then no matter how effective your MA may be then people are not going to send their kids there and that seems to be a core part of the success of local MA clubs. 3. They are putting out a decent amount of material on KZitem etc for self study. I think that's important to allow students to catch up on missed classes or to just study and progress at home, to practice!!! IMHO the styles that think this isn't important will become less important in the modern world. 4. There are some great practitioners of karate at the higher GKR ranks (unfortunately this doesn't filter down to every class). 5. For parents of kids: If you can find a local dojo and your kids love it then fantastic, f their friends are there then even better, it gets them out and involved and hopefully it will install an "active in life" attitude. So go for it. It's local and easy and provided the instructor isn't a total nunce and the class is fun then they will get something out of it. 6. For Adults: It really depends on what you're looking for. If you want to learn with your kids or eventually teach kids/beginners classes etc and really don't have too much concern for the overall effectiveness of the art or want to practice with your kids, then it's a great choice. You will learn some great self defence things, get a bit fitter, the kids will have fun and get more coordinated. However if you really want to learn how to fight then karate is an excellent but long journey, I don't think many people will argue that some styles such as Muay Thai make you an effective fighter quicker, and if that is your sole purpose then that's probably the way you should go. Personally I think Karate offers more though in terms of personal (and for me in some ways spiritual) development along with developing a fighting skill at the same time. Cons. 1. Okay. IMHO this vid shows and old guy sparring a young guy that is going easy on him. So not a good look overall for the club out of context, we can all see that it is a pathetic performance made to look "flowy" or "stylish" but in reality is rubbish and is actually not what is taught by the club. As you may read in other comments Robert Sullivan is over 70, has had stomach cancer and stomach removed, and he has battled with joint issues and more. That's all hard to deal with as the head of a karate "business", so maybe he should have already passed on the mantle! Regardless it's worth noting when judging him. 2. I've never seen Robert Sullivan do anything more than basic techniques (and pretty poor at that). I've been part of the club on and off for many years, and I've never seen a good example of Kansho executing good technique, let alone kicking someones arse in a competition. Nor does he have promotable results in competition, gradings in other karate or other martial arts styles. So yes I have to agree that as far as I know he is "self proclaimed" grade and self proclaimed as a traditional style of karate. 3. The instructors at the standard class don't have a plan and may not be very competent. They typically haven't thought out the class beforehand and are playing it by ear with very limited guidance. The senior/instructors classes don't really give the instructors much to work off. That's not to say that many lower level and kids classes aren't awesome, but that's purely dependent on the actual instructor and the "system" does nothing to ensure it. 4. Shinan Stacey has been instrumental in developing GKR for many years. He has also been training in traditional Goju Ryu methods in Japan and it is (IMHO) his accomplishments that have previously given GKR "legitimacy" as an authentic Traditional Japanese Martial Art. He has now left GKR. As of 2019 Shihan Stacey currently holds 6th Dan Goju Ryu Seiwakai and 6th Dan Goju Kai (as I understand it) graded in Japan. He has left GKR and if I was in Sydney I'd definitely be checking out his new club Goshukan Karate Academy. He looks to be taking an approach of training for effectiveness and what may work in the modern world, but still keeping some of the traditional aspects including kata. The blend looks intriguing to me. Thats about sums it up I think. Hope this helps people make a decision. I am by no means saying that you should avoid GKR but do it understanding it's limitations.

Yh, the model of the business is really bad. But, I also agree with the promotion of Karate values, they are really big on that. I train in one of the English branches and the quality really depends on the instructor. Some of them are brilliant and mix in their own stuff as well as practise other martial arts/styles, whilst others have no idea what they are doing. It's brilliant for kids but I wouldn't necessarily reccomend it for adults/older teens if they want something that becomes effective quickly (although that goes for most of Karate anyways, it's only good if you spend years on it).

From what I understand his recognised grade is 2nd dan Shotokan (although there are stories he got that in exchange for sponsoring someone as an immigrant, not sure how true that is). It took him the thick end of 20 years to get that. He then set up GKR & ceased training himself around 84. He graded himself to 6th dan & has used his 'senior' students to grade him to 8th dan. My background is Goju & I find this pitiful, I would think someone from Shotokan would find this even more so.

We have black belt instructors, nobody gets special treatment or bumped up the belts quickly (the early belts are quite quick anyway to give the kids some early motivation, but generally, there's no special treatment, no matter who you know). This region wins a lot of medals at competitions, and it's clear from the regional tournaments that some of the other areas are woeful, but they aren't all bad.

Every legit place I know will happily let you go watch them train and join in a few times without signing upto anything. After Quickly checking this nonsense out it seems they do no hard sparring (point sparring is absolutely useless) nothing is pressure tested. The founder 100% can't defend himself and basically trained in a legit martial art decades ago wasn't any good so made up this nonsense 🙄. If you actually tried to use this nonsense in a fight against someone who can handle themselves you'll get badly hurt. He did not even bother to finish the structured training bit.He claims to have trained in Goju, as someone who has trained in Goju for decades I can assure you he knows bugger all about it. All he wants is your money. It is hard to accept that you have been conned, but you have. Try training is Shotokan, Wado, Goju, Shorin or one of the other legit styles for a few weeks & see just how far from the real martial art you are.

i hope everybody who is speaking negatively on GKR knows that Robert Sullivan is a stomach cancer survivor, has horrible hips and knees, is 70 years old, and is still keeping up with people. I'd say he's doing quite well for someone who has no stomach... At the end of the day, a chudan tzuki is still a chudan tzuki. It doesn't matter the school... I've been with GKR for 11 years now and i have trained with various school in various styles. They're all the same. It's all how you take the training and applying it....

Try doing a few weeks of a legitimate style & see how you compare to the equivalent grades in that style. It won't be good.

Does these kind of teachers really think they are legit martial artists, or do they consciously just scam people?
