Many thanks for this upload Stig! Although this obviously wasn't a game to celebrate for Italy, watching it again after all these years I am delighted and impressed anew by the stylish and technically brilliant passing play of the Italians of this era, particularly of Baggio. The Irish defended brilliantly the whole game, naturally focusing a lot of their attention on Baggio, and yet his variety of passing (and the execution) in this game is impressive. Fast, accurate one touch passing through tight spaces, something he excelled at, is clear to see here. He rarely lost the ball either.

Baguio was indeed a class footballer but let’s be fair and mention big Paul McGrath’s performance that day in the giants stadium

McGrath, Keane, Irwin and the rest of the Ireland team, played like men possessed that day. It would have been difficult for anybody to have beaten them. They closed all the spaces and flung themselves at everything. That said, Baggio played well. It's a real pity that Sacchi didn't persevere with Baggio and Signori as his first choice strike force. Given time to gel, they could have developed into a devastating partnership.

They had certainly been pretty good together in the qualification matches, they knew each other well and it was a good partnership. I think Sacchi went on a detour down a tactical dead end by trying to harness Signori's pace as a benefit for the wing rather than simply treating him as he was, a centre forward (who had topped the Serie A scoring charts two seaons in a row at that point!).

From 2:53 till 2:56 I believe the commentator said that Roberto Baggio and Dinno Baggio are brothers. This isn't true.

Yeah, that's George Hamilton, a legendary commentator but also known for his gaffes. Here's a quote: "And Ireland have got to contain the brothers Baggio." [Later in the game…] "The Baggio brothers, of course, are not related". lolz

I always thought it was somewhat hyperbolic when people said that McGrath completely pocketed Baggio all game. Yes, don't get me wrong, McGrath and Ireland put in a fantastic defensive performance, with McGrath winning several key challenges against Baggio in the second half, and after a somewhat fortuitous goal, the Irish were very clever to waste time by passing it back to the keeper from midfield, as that stretched the Italian side (which isn't want Sacchi wanted as he preferred a high line with little distance between the defence and the attack) and the heat made it impossible for Sacchi's men to press further up the pitch as well. So yes, the Irish fought hard and did what they needed to get the job done. But Baggio, although he wasn't brilliant or at his best by anymeans as the best player in the world at the time (he had also just recovered from injury however and Sacchi changed Italy's system right before the start of the tournament, which probably affected Italy's gameplay negatively), especially later during the second half where he lost the ball more, he wasn't terrible or anonymous either; I thought it was more that Italy collectively were rather poor and couldn't hold onto the ball or create anything, and the front-line was very isolated from the midfield, who couldn't control the game or play one-touch football that Sacchi wanted, so Baggio was forced to drop deep to start things up, but he was still very involved in the build-up of plays and still managed to create some chances for himself and others even though he didn't really test Ireland with his efforts on goal, so it was a disappointing opening match, but I've seen other players receive far less criticism for worse performances.

No he wasn't, he was able to play loads of passes successfully and had a few shots too, a few of which I think would have been goals had they not been playing with that unfamiliar Adidas Questra (there were a lot of player complaints about shots going higher than expected). McGrath played well, but don't exaggerate.
