Yeah, that's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Men in Tights is a spoof of Robin Hood in general and Prince of Thieves in particular, having come out shortly after that movie did. Robin's line earlier in the movie about "unlike some *other* Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent" is directly mocking Kevin Costner's Robin in Prince of Thieves since Costner didn't even attempt an English accent the entire film.

1-I'd be curious to know what other languages called the sheriff. In Quebec French we kept Mervin, but in France they went for Prosper, which I think is equally funny. ;) Any other dubs that changed his name?.. 2-I like how the sheriff, for all his impatience and unamusement, still constantly strokes Marian's fingers with his thumb. It seems out of character to me, and I like to think that was actually lovely Roger doing it unconsciously.. 3- If we didn't like the Prince until then, I think at 0:41, we all do.. ;) It's just endearing how he can't contain his amusement..

In italian it's "Smervino", a meaningless name, but pronounced similarly to "Smerdino", which recalls the word "merda", that is "shit". For my part I would be curious to know why "Mervin" is so funny in english; in any case, and in any language, it's a fantastic scene!
@JayeMallard619
4 жыл бұрын
@@pietrobarile7110 Thank you for your insight. That's clever, take an existing word and change one letter to squeeze the original "Mervin" in it. I looked up "smerdino" and Google tells me it means "refrain from shitting". If you can confirm this translation, then I'm thinking that the sheriff being quite stuck up, I guess we could say "constipated", it all makes perfect comical sense. :) As for "Mervin", of course Mel Brooks' full name is Melvyn, so there may be something there. I have a blu ray of the film with his commentary, and he mentions Merv Griffin having given him permission to use the name Mervin. Merv Griffin was very wealthy, so maybe there's an allusion there... but I guess ultimately Mervin is just a funny sounding name that contrasts with how seriously the sheriff takes himself. That's all I'm gathering... Thanks again for the info. :)
@pietrobarile7110
4 жыл бұрын
@@JayeMallard619 Well, it isn't really a correct translation, but it is a complicated matter: google translates (badly) a verbal form, which has the accent on the letter e (and which means more or less "they soil"; in the film instead the name of the sheriff has the accent on i, which means nothing but which gives the idea of a diminutive (which in italian is done with the suffix -ìno). In practice it sounds like "little shit", but with an almost affectionate tone, like an absurd nickname for babies. On purpose, I apologize for this absurd explanation, almost worthy of a Mel Brooks movie, but it's only to clarify! Thank you for the explanation related to english!
