Been there, done that, several times. Rigging failures like that will sure spice up your day. Goin' great, and suddenly, splat.

I flipped a cheap Hobie cat in the Gulf years ago. The steering tiller bar broke from its connection and over we went. The mast was pointed toward the bottom of the ocean and we had to have a patrol boat drag us back to shore. Never could get that mast up. Boat rental dude said it was our fault but it was faulty equipment and off we went. I loved Hobies when I was young and strong but they hold no charm in my waning years.

They righted that from a full turtle pretty quickly. How? Must have had some floatation I guess.

It's important to not sit on the hull that's out of the water because it forces the boat to turtle like that. If the water is shallow the masthead can get stuck in the bottom which is very awkward.
@AlohaKOS

the turtle was intentional and actively supported. Cat lying on its side drifts off very quckly in strong wind. If you know that your mate has no chance to reach the cat by swimming you should turtle immediately.

@@AlohaKOS I can see the value of turtling in that case. Thanks for the explanation.

Especially if the wind and waves are trying to jam the top of the mast into the mud at the bottom. I went out sailing the Hobie 16 in about 40 knot winds before a hurricane with my kid in the Banana river. It was a hoot, the wind was so strong that it actually pushed the boat right back over the rudders, like a back flip, twice. We were laughing so hard it's a wonder we didn't drown. Probably should have reefed the sail, but where's the fun in that? We also pitch poled the hell out of it once, while stabbing into a wave. It was nuts. Yeah, dumb, but fun. The hurricane that came in several hours after that, not so much.

@@MrJdseniorMost of my sailing experience has been on a Hobie 16 as well in all kinds of conditions. I had so much fun with that boat since it was good for single-handing and with crew.

I'm in the same boat, pun intended. So many hundreds of hours on my H16 ranging from calm and paddling by hand to 20+ knot winds and big waves, single-handed and with up to 3 people. Hobie Alter made a great sailboat!

wait! i didn;t see any video showing how boat got from mast down position to mast on the water position. that seems like hardest part of uprighting. cool vid in any case.

I always found the hardest part to be when the sail was coming free of the water, waiting for that water to drain away. It seemed like I was standing on the lower hull leaning back on the righting rope, forever, at that point. I'm not too sure what these guys were doing, they were kind of making a career out of righting that thing.
