"Parents don't care what their children are doing online as long as they are quiet while doing it" is pretty spot-on and has been like this since the 90s. The only major difference is that back in the 90s, parents could reasonably claim "We didn't know any better". Parents today don't have that excuse anymore.

At worst, I’m called a liar and they stick their heads in the sand so they don’t have to google anything or do any homework. God forbid you have to interact with your child if they can’t play their game anymore. Letting your child play a game made by predators for predators and burying your head to all of it is wack. Back in the early 2010’s, my 4-6 year old cousin was obsessed with Roblox and I’d play it with him whenever he came to visit. One day, he wanted to play a high school simulator, which was not his normal genre. I assumed he wanted to grief some roleplayers together, but boy was I wrong. He got super upset when I tried to run people over with the cars(what else are they there for??) Of course the roleplay wasn’t about pretending to be teachers and students like cops and robbers. It was about pretending to be teens negotiating intimate encounters between class. I watched in horror as some stranger offered my child cousin a pretend beej in a virtual broom closet. I tried not to make a big deal about it while trying to distract him with a different game because I didn’t want him to get fixated on it or develop some complex, but I still don’t know if I did the right thing… I’m positive that wasn’t the only time something like that happened to him, when he was safe with someone older who could pull the plug at any time… I think about all the good he spent alone in his room at his parents’ house and it makes me so sad. I wonder what he would be like now without that sort of influence… I did what I could to report it to Roblox, but it felt like I got nowhere and last I checked, there are still high school roleplay servers. God help the zoomers left in the care of Roblox and TikTok by their clueless gen-x parents.

He's actually facing two 10-to-life sentences. That means he might serve as little as 7.5 years. If he's found guilty of both charges, he'll be sentenced to 20 to life, meaning he'll be out in 17 years (in federal prison, you only serve 85% of your sentence if you're chill,) as long as he doesn't commit more crimes in prison. The "to-life" part means that after 17 years, in this case, (as long as he diesnt get his parole revoked,) the court and parole will reassess, and if the parole board doesn't think he's ready to be released then he'll continue serving time until he is, and he could end up in prison for as much as life if the parole board continually finds him unfit to go home every time. It means there is no maximum amount of time that he could be repeatedly turned down for parole. It's very unlikely unless he is, for instance, a perpetually violent inmate. "X-to-life" sentences don't mean you might be sentenced to serve a life sentence; "X-to-life" is the sentence. Only 'life without parole' means you'll definitely serve a life sentence. "X-to-life" just means 'X' is the minimum (with good time it's X • 0.85 in the federal system,) and the 'life' part is just the maximum time the parole board can optionally deny release if he habitually disappoints them. It's almost certainly not gonna happen that way. In the right-most column where if says "Life" under the "Supervised Release" section, that means if and when he's released from prison he will have to be supervised for the rest of his life (it's either literally lifetime parole check-ins, or a lifetime of something similar to parole.) This sentence is because of the nature of his specific crime.
@jtilly-th3ui

Sorry, as someone who's served time i. The feds, that's not how it works. The federal system has no parole. If you’re gonna state that you aren’t the kind of person to do this, let’s say someone came to you after your mind stopped thinking about this topic and gave you the opportunity to work in a shady company with a $1,000,000 per hour salary, would you take the offer without a second thought? The victims are children who will be traumatised for life. I hope they're in an environment safe enough to properly recover in now.
@SherrifOfNottingham

Quick note: As somebody who's seen the victims of this stuff first hand, I'll try to explain that one of the biggest problems they face is how much society treats them like a cancer patient for going through something relatively innocuous. Sure it's not a good thing to happen sure, but reminding them of how "awful" sex is... well it kind of causes more problems than it solves.
@kalimera3452

@@SherrifOfNottingham Yeah, I agree. If you tell a young, impressionable person how they should feel, instead of listening to their own natural feelings on the matter, it will make them believe their own feelings are wrong and they SHOULD feel traumatized. Thereby making them traumatized. Personally, I’ve gone through several unwanted sexual encounters on the internet when I was younger, and yes, they did make me feel uncomfortable, and I learned from them, but I don’t feel broken for life like some people seem to WANT me to believe. It’s ridiculous. It is a bad thing to go through something like that, however it is not untruthful to say, that trauma can be influenced by others’ opinions of what happened, causing a victim to worry and overthink it. This is especially true for individuals with thought patterns relating to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, as in thinking “Oh they’re worried? Maybe I should be worried…” and then the rumination begins, and the placebo effect takes place, when it wouldn’t have even been there in the first place. Don’t tell people how to think when it comes to their own experiences. It just makes things worse.
@SecuR0M

They aren't traumatized for life. Stop making the children feel guilty and bad for one mistake they made lol. It was a dumb thing, nothing happened, and now it's over. There's no "trauma" to be had. Saying that just makes you part of the problem. Making children feel like they should be traumatized for being victims is morally the same as grooming tbh.

As a parent, I disagree for myself personally about screens being distractions. I am terrified of this sort of thing happening to my children, so I am always inclined to play with them at least till I know that there's nothing shifty going on then leave them unsupervised. If anything, screens are no easier than being out at the park.

@@dawnseeker176 if you teach your children right and teach them internet safety then usually you dont need to sit with them while they play, because that can also be a bit of a breach of privacy. My whole family was taught internet safety and we were able to use the internet fine. Its also important to teach them internet safety early on so when they get older and into their teens they know this information and can have their own personal devices such as a phone to contact their parents in case of emergencys. Ofc when they are young its fine to check on their devices alot and make sure they are not engaging in anything bad

This hits home, but it is very good to hear that he was arrested, possibly for life. If Roblox cared about these situations, one of my friends could still be around today. My friend was a victim on the platform. (context) Allegations came up in 2020 of a former staff member for a game known as The Vibe Cafe, had a document made on them having exhaustive (but limited) evidence on someone who I believe was named Neimoru. Allegedly, it was a 15-19 relationship and the guy got away with allegedly grooming the child. Allegedly, the creator of the game, Bloxxek, had defended the staff member. No action was taken on Roblox's part to protect the victim or punish the predator. If the allegations are true, Landon is still out there because Roblox enables, and does nothing about predators on their own platform. They'd rather sue people like Ruben Sim.

They might have just been grounded or barred from the internet, I don't know if they, you know, or even got kidnapped/killed, but if they were groomed and the parents found out, they probably got barred from using their internet services. Though I don't know the full context.

Quite a lot of Roblox Devs are horrid. Ive done a ton of testership over the last 10 years, almost every one has either fallen into pedophillia or corrupt greed. I'm fortunate enough to spend the last 3 years with a truly reliable team who I've come to know as friends. It's a shame but it won't be addressed by Roblox as they benefit regardless of any outcome, and are the dominator of the platform genre so there's no alternative.

Even if the predator gave the kid the money to give to the Uber driver, surely having that much cash would be questionable for someone that young, along with the long Uber trip in the first place, right?
