I hope in 2039 when Yokai Watch is as old as Robopon is now, a KZitemr has the same exact journey with it that you did discovering Robopon, because, it's literally the exact same scenario you described in your Reddit post half a year ago. Yokai Watch basically got so big in Japan that it actually temporarily dethroned Pokemon before Level-5 ruined its reputation. They tried to release it in the west, and people just dumped vitriol on it as a 'Pokemon killer' and basically went on a hate crusade that killed the brand outside Japan so hard Level-5 literally was unable to operate their English language division for something like four years. SUPER looking forward to digging into this video. You rule. Signed, a fellow autistic transfemme who thanks to the guy who translated MOTHER 3 live translating Yokai Watch on Twitch with his wife had a very intense Yokai Watch fixation in the mid 2010s, and was incredibly sad to see what happened when it came to the US.
@juliannocartagena2007

Ahem, you act like EVERYONE hated Yo-kai Watch when it got localized. Man your description of everything seems so exaggerated and yet a bit wrong. LEVEL-5 IA only shut down from low sales, NOT USA hating on Yo-kai Watch.
@SquidHominid
4 ай бұрын
@@juliannocartagena2007 Man, I lived it. The hate online was *vicious,* and I don't think I'm wrong to think that the low sales were partially because of the backlash and the amount of negative content about it online, including KZitem. Level-5 IA / Abby likely shut down because they tried to push Yokai Watch as hard as they could in the US and overextended themselves. Remember they had a merch deal with Hasbro that flopped and even tried to put the first movie into theatres as a one-day-only event. The games had a limited audience to begin with being monster collection RPGs, and when the most vocal members of the biggest fanbase of monster collection RPGs overwhelmingly hated your guts, of course you're not going to have good sales.
@juliannocartagena2007
4 ай бұрын
@@SquidHominidWell, that explains better, I remember a Nitro Rad video where he rightfully criticized Jimmy Whetzel’s crappy video on the first game. Oh and by the way, you wanna see a bigger LEVEL-5 localization fail? Check out LBX. Only the first game got localized and the only things we got from the second are the protagonists from it being extras in the version of the first game we got, a special appearance on Inazuma Eleven GO Chrono Stones and the anime of the second one. Aside from that, NOTHING!
@juliannocartagena2007

@@juliannocartagena2007 Yeah, I'm very aware of LBX. Level-5 really just tends to either put their entire ass into marketing something or just kinda let it die unceremoniously and Yokai Watch due to them overexerting themselves financially kinda got...both. Hope you have a good one.

Did fucking Toby Fox write Robopon 2? Did they use a time machine to bring him on as associate comedy writer? More likely he was inspired by the comedy style of other Japanese games and specifically RPG's, notably the Mother series. I can recognize the DNA, no wonder Undertale and Deltarune were immediately translated into Japanese, the jokes must flow so naturally, it's a very Japanese comedy style but in English. So much so these English Translated Japanese Jokes make me think "Robert "Toby" "Fwug" "Radiation" Fox is that you?"

I am shocked at how far I made it in this game as a stupid child. I got this game after seeing a one page advert in Nintendo Power like a stupid kid (something I would later do with Cubivore, another weird Atlus published Nintendo console game, check it out some time). I as a small child with no patience and never talking to NPC's somehow got all the way up to the part where you ride the motorcycle Robopon and could not figure out how to upgrade it to make it traverse further. This video gave me a flashback to figuring out the sea grapes by total accident after months of not knowing where they were by randomly hitting a at the shore line and getting them. I relived that moment for a second and it was amazing. I am dipping on the video at 44:08 Minutes ( this is so I can comeback after I go replay the game myself and can compare notes) Great video, I'm gonna let it run without watching it for now for those sweet sweet metrics because it is clearly a great video, can't wait to see what else you do!

Honestly I like these weird non-pokemon monster tamer games cause they usually have weird ideas. Telefang had a funny mechanic where you "called" the Denjuus, which they had to physically go to where you were so if you were far away from where you met them, it'd take a while for them to get them. I honestly really dug it cause it gave you a reason to try out new monsters. I honestly personally like it more than the first gen (and maybe second, I go back and forth on that one lol). Also I got Viggy, hell yeah look at that little dude. There is something funny about you seemingly choosing paws cause it's a cat that ended up leading to the tangent of kuro chan. Some of the sprite censorship is really funny. Unfortunate stuff about Kamat aside, one of the robopons just being a weiner is so funny for how odd it is. I hope the robopon wasn't designed with kamat in mind though. Man robopon 1 lore went wild towards the end. Yo that debug mode is dope, wish more games had one like that! Honestly seeing the manga and cards surprised me (actually just how much merch there was in general), I suppose it shouldn't be that wild but didn't expect it. Though I personally disagree with that sunny redesign, the original is so cute. Honestly robopon 64 looks like the kind of game I'd get obsessed with as a kid, both about taking care of creatures and also battling and such. Man a lot of the changes to robopon 2 do seem really unfortunate. It feels like they wanted to "simplify" it, but went so far in that direction. But then the level being cut in half is such a unneeded complication? I am glad the writing and humor improved a lot it seems.

It's incredible how much slapstick comedy and physical humor can be conveyed by unchanging sprites on a 3 inch screen

The closing thoughts with this really resonated with me. If this was about 5 years ago, I'd say the exact same thing about Beyblade or at least the original series. I don't ask for the reviewer to like the source material, just something insightful. I don't know if this video makes me want to try the games, but it does a whole lot more in getting me into the series than anyone else who's talked about it. Seeing its own take and unique ideas was definitely great to see and got me thinking! Hope someone does the same for something like Kentai Denju Telefang and its sequel. I think it's more interesting to actually explore what something like Robopon has to offer than to brush it aside and act like it's so much lesser. Thanks for making a cool video!

17:15 ok then is like regular RPG then. You have a robot, each has 1 equipment slot, could be the arms or wings, unless they have legs, in which case you are screw. Also, software are your skills, which use the equiped item to cast, thus using EP (mana) but when not skill is equip it will just bonk with the equiped item Evolving boot robot for part is such a wild concept, that make me remember medabot swaping prt mechanic

Even though I never played Robopon, I must admit the games have always intrigued me. I want to see some sort of remaster or port of these games, but the sad thing is nobody cares enough for these games and most people only remember the first game which was literally Pokémon but reskinned which probably gave them a bad first impression, unfortunately meaning these games and by proxy the franchise will probably never be brought back. Great video! P.S. You get quite angry in the gameplay, it’s funny but I also feel bad for you, also the story is freaking unhinged.

I feel like you probably won't read this, but the Robopon at 1:39:45 and 1:39:46, more specifically マン (Man), シンマン (Shin Man), マンセブン (Man Seven) and マンタロウ (Man Taro), seem to be inspirited by Ultraman, Ultraman Jack (once called Shinman, due to him originally being just "Ultraman" in his debut series and there needed to be some way to differentiate him from the original Ultraman), Ultraseven and Ultraman Taro, respectably . Don't know why I thought I had to mention that, I'm just a big Ultraman fan and was really surprised to see Robopon inspired by Ultramen. By the way, Shin Man probably has one of those bags either to make him more different from Man or as a reference to the fact that either 1) Ultraman Jack left Earth without an actual reason to in the end of his debut series, or 2) It's a parody on the fact that Jack was the "Returning Ultraman", so Shin Man is the opposite, being the "Leaving Man". And, *if* you actually read this, I've been really enjoying your content lately. You kinda just appeared in my recommended for sometime and then I decided to give one of your videos a shot and just really liked it. Something about your style of content just stuck with me and I'm too stupid to actually figure out for myself what it was. And I also am stunned by the level of dedication you put into these and made me realize how much research it actually needs to be done to make videos like this one, on top of writing and editing. I also really like the sections with the puppet, I find them quite funny and unique. I have a lot more to say, but I have terrible memory, so I don't remember everything I wanted to say + I'm terrible with compliments. In summary, you made great stuff, keep up the amazing work and have a nice day. :3
