Video footage taken on Oct. 2 shows Jun Mizutani, who earned a bronze medal in the men’s table tennis single’s competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics, pitting his paddle skills against a robot opponent during a press preview for the CEATEC Japan 2017 electronics exhibition beginning in Chiba on Oct. 3. The Forpheus robot, developed by Omron Corp. to showcase its AI technology, was recognized by Guinness World Records in autumn 2016 as the world’s first robot for table tennis coaching. The latest model proved a surprise to Mizutani, who was impressed with its ability to return his smash.
