Sequential hermaphrodite: Rock Beauty Angelfish (Holacanthus tricolor). Rock Beauty angelfish all begin life as females as part of a harem under a single larger male. If the male disappears, one of the females in the harem may change sex becoming the new harem master. Spawning takes place probably every night, with the male spawning with one or more of the females in his harem. This is old 480 video upscaled to 1080 using Topaz Video AI.
Hydrolab study: In 1981 and 1982, I joined fellow University of Hawai'i graduate students Tom Hourigan, Frank Stanton, Phil Motta and Chris Kelley in St. Croix. We spent a total of two weeks living underwater in the Hydrolab following the behavior of angelfishes. Frank and I worked on the Rock Beauty Angelfish capturing & tagging them so we could identify individual fish. We dropped flags as we followed each fish so we could map their territories. Males occupied non-overlapping territories averaging 1053 sq. meters (1,259 sq. yards), each with a harem of 2-4 females. Food consisted primarily of sponges but also some algae. Much more detail is in our publication: Hourigan T., et al. 1989. Envir. Biol. of Fishes, vol 24(2): 105-116.
