I am a huge Rock Island fan! I just bought the MAPP 9mm and haven't even fired it yet. That being said, I have every expectation that I will be pleased. I have owned 2 RIA 1911 FS Ultras (9mm and 45 Auto) for quite some time. I absolutely love these pistols. They are very accurate and reliable. I have read some reviews on the 9mm where professional shooters who have reviewed it actually said they would feel very comfortable shooting this pistol in competition. Big RIA fan!

Both the SAR and this are identical to the Tanfoglio Force 99 / EAA Witness Polymer. The Tanfoglio was the original one. SAR first started to assemble Tanfoglio parts in Turkey, and then begun to manufacture all the parts. Armscor still assembles Tanfoglio parts in the Philippines.

These are manufactured by Tanfoglio for RIA and Tanfoglio CZ-75 styled pistols were one of the few quality clones that were being imported back in the late 70's and 80's when the Czech products were not allowed access to the American market. The slide riding inside the frame versus on outer rails design was actually first designed by Charles Petter in 1935 which was acquired by Sig Sauer in 1937 to make the 47/8 pistol (Sig P-210). So when we credit CZ for the styling and design we are actually incorrect in doing so. It is a proven design that has been around since the start of WWII and is still in production by Sig as a competition platform P-210 today. The P-210 however is a SAO pistol like the 1911. So CZ didn't completely ripoff the design they just borrowed some of the features that made it famous for being a super accurate tack driver. So thank Charles Petter for the design and Sig for making it super popular throughout Europe and then CZ for producing a DA/SA variant that has become probably the second most copied design next to the 1911. I love CZ-75 and their variants having had numerous different CZ's in both 9mm and 40 cal. through the past 25 years. They are amazingly accurate, manageable, and reliable. I got a chance to shoot a newer Sig P-210 back in October and I am going to say this, it is by far the most accurate and smooth running 9mm pistol I have shot in my entire life and I have shot some really nice custom center pistols when competing. The Sig P-210 is something special and for lack of any other analogy it is like a finely tuned Swiss Movement Clock accurate to the millisecond and rightfully so seeing that Sig is a Swiss manufacturer. Thanks for the review and I have to say that in my opinion RIA was very smart choosing Tanfoglio for a poly CZ-75 variant for joint branding, as it is a well established and reknowned manufacturer of CZ-75 based competition pistols in Europe and they actually manufactured the lowers for IMI/IWI Jericho pistols for quite some time.

@@MatteoThirteenSeventyOne in it's original design the 1935A by Petter was chambered in 7.65x20mm longue when Sig obtained the design in 1937 they went through many renditions and design upgrades before coming up with the 47/8 in 1947 but the final commercial design didn't come until 1949 and stayed in production until 1975 and if you look at them they look like the early CZ-75 models just in a SA format. They were offered in 7.65x21, 9x19 parabellum, and a .22 LR conversion kit. If you look at the controls on the early p-210 they are located in the same places as the 226 with the exception of the magazine release. Very cool you can tell where CZ-75's got their design cues but also how the P-226-229 got there design cues.

Several important things I didn't think you addressed: 1. Is the safety lever a decocker? I watched you manually.lower the hammer by pulling the trigger. VERY UNSAFE! 2. If the hammer is lowered on a live round and the gun dropped on the hammer, will it go BANG? 3. Can you rack the slide with the safety on? No decocker on a DA/SA gun NO SALE!
@KSGunGuy01

I addressed the safety and lack of decocker. Lowering the hammer on an unloaded gun is totally safe. If the gun is dropped on the hammer it will not go off. This isn’t a 70 series 1911. You cannot rack the slide with the safety on.

The Tanfoglio versions of the same gun have the double option, or a 1911 style safety ("f" versions), or a M9 style slide mounted safety-decocker ("r" versions). www.tanfoglio.it/eng/catalogo/defence/r-f-versions.html

When I say its the exact same gun even the grip texture and the serial number plate are exact copies. My only complaint was no decoker.

I wonder if one of those upper slides would fit a CZ P01 or CZ PCR / CZ 75 Compact. If they do, it might be an actual viable option thats cheaper than buying another entire CZ for the slide to mill for optics. CZ Compacts are my carry guns of choice, and I just cant get behind the CZShadow2 Compact with no FPB in a Defensive minded Pistol

its cool....Ambi safety would be nice....some beveling on the muzzle end would be nice....decockers are cool too.....also getting the rear sight as far back as possible to maximize sight radius is a plus....over all C-....IMO

Not sure how close it is to the SAR k2p but reminds of the 19X theory in a CZ75.

Looks like a cool gun . I have found that when you add the cost of night sights & an extra mag to = many other guns for sale , the cost is about the same +/- . I think a staked sight can come off ( not every day ) , the local gun smith said $50 to mill a dovetail , the best option . No dis on Rock Island ! Get the best & cry once . Are the mags on this gun Common to any other guns ?? Thanks !!

Great idea about getting the front sight dovetailed by a gunsmith! Thankfully, it still served well as is. Thank you as always and cheers Dan!

I had a Spr Arm GI 45 , sights sucked ( I got in a trade ) & I put Night Sights on all my guns for the most part . It had a Staked front sight , the guy said " You will be way better off if I make a dovetail for the new sights , because staked sights can go missing in 1 shot " . I wanted to save $50++ ( job cost about $150 total as is ) , would have been $200+ ?? The front sight fit poorly & went in at a tilt & couldn't be fixed , not really a big deal , but , to now make it right would be Over $100 ++ ?? Learn from my foolishness , do it right or don't do it ! In other words , Quality is Economy & you will always be happy working with quality . BTW , I had $50 to spend & I should have done it Right the first time , I know better now !! @@KSGunGuy01

I had a similar problem with my RIA MAPP, the safety! Sent it back to RIA and they fixed it. The question is, how did it get past RIAs "Quality Control"?

Interesting. I’ve always wondered why there were no “real” reviews of this pistol. I wish Armscor offered a decocker option, though. Job well done. Slightly different format/credits, I see. Also well done.

KS - what about the sight radius? It's terrible. For $239.99 would rather have the B6P from CDNN. I have it and it is one of my most accurate guns. Agree that the CZ design is one of the best.

Great review as always!! It's a nice looking gun, but for the price I think I would just but a CZ. I think in terms of company reputation it makes more sense. I have heard the RIA is improving, but I don't see that they will ever have the name that CZ has.

@@gigglebush277 Well the one advantage of the MAPP vs the EAA Witness is the EAA tends to use MIM or Cast front & rear rail inserts. So while EAA imported Tanfo is cheaper. There is a slight difference. Or at least there was as of the last time I tore one down to rebuild.

@@MatteoThirteenSeventyOne gotcha! thank you! i have had an eaa witness for a year (with 3 spare magazines) and the only flaw i've had with it is one of the mags fails to feed a lot. and its always the same mag. This question is bugging me lately: Will the 22TCM9R (the version of 22TCM bullet that is supposed to work with 9mm pistols/handguns) will work with Ruger PC Carbine 9mm? Coz if it would, Ruger PC Carbine just added +1000 awesome points in my book. I cant afford to try it with Ruger PC Carbine so Im throwing the question on channels that might be able to source out a Ruger PC Carbine to test the 22TCM9R.

Just curious and maybe I’m losing my mind. Why do you slightly dip the gun down and bring it back up before you take your first shot? Hopefully my description makes sense to you.
@KSGunGuy01
5 жыл бұрын
When testing a new gun (you are seeing the very first shots), I like to get a feel for how it points in relation to the target. I shoot different and often new guns every week so I have to get a feel for them very quickly and the dip is a byproduct of that. Thank you and cheers!
