I mean, Rod Temperton is an unsung hero here, but most people are much more familiar with MJ and Quincy. Might be biased because I just so happen to be wearing my Heatwave t-shirt today, but the dude wrote some mega classic hits for other artists, and his own band had jams outside of just Boogie Nights. He wrote "Ladies Night" by Kool & The Gang as another example. Huge.

@@en0n126 Only just now learned that Rod Temperton was in Heatwave, even though I was familiar with his name as the guy who wrote a load of Michael Jackson's songs. Not quite sure what i thought he was up to, I feel like I had this idea of a 'songwriter' as a guy employed by a big record company, but, for some reason, wasn't in a band, like in my mind Rod was just sat quietly in a corner with loads of song ideas waiting for MJ to arrive. As someone who thinks they have a bit of knowledge about music, I hereby place my dunce cap upon my bonce.

There’s something that should be pointed out here…there was a popular dance out at this time called “the rock” (MJ actually is doing the dance in the video). The tempo was a great fit for the dance and considering the dance preceded the record… and the fact that MJ frequented spots like Studio 54, one would have to think that the song was leaning on the popularity of the dance.

Right. Michael Jackson is 50% James Brown / 50% Marvin Gaye, and Prince is 50% James Brown / 50% Jimi Hendrix. For Both their biggest influence is James Brown. The dance, the phraseology - turning a 2 cyclable word into a 3 cylable word, adding that extra punch at the end. (Example the song Kiss by Prince..'You don't need experience To turn me out-Tuh ..You just leave it all up to me I'm gonna show you what it's all about-Tuh). The supreme confidence and OWNERSHIP of the stage.. MJ and Prince got that from James and the #1 thing they got from him is the Work Ethic

More than a decade later (i think it was 1997), as I and my friends passed by a party, Rock With You was playing, I was captivated by the bass! The next day, I had to buy the cassette tape. As I listened to the bass, I thought to myself, can someone really play that? That was the start of my bass guitar journey. Shoutout to Bobby Watson! (I've thanked you before, but let me appreciate you once again here.) Bobby said there were 3 of them who laid the bass line down but was glad Quincy chose his.

I never thought about any of this before. But now that you mention it I'm noticing everything you're saying is true. Rock with You is one of my favorite Michael songs. It makes you wanna dance and cry at the same time lol (maybe the crying is just me because I'm so sentimental) but it's smooth and groovy at the same time.

yes one of my favorite songs!! I love MJ's catalog so much because it never fails to stand the test of time because of the modern pop influence you hear in every decade following his albums

Just another reason why Rock With You was, is, and always will be my favourite MJ song. One of my earliest memories was watching the music video on TV, and I was so happy when Ninja Sex Party covered it as well 😁 to me this song is like peanut butter, it just goes with everything 🤣

The Quincy Jones demonstration was amazing...and the Star Wars analogy was great. "Rock With You" is probably my all-time favorite song. Why haven't I followed you before? Thanks for the video!
