My brother and I converted a barn to my home and one of the more complicated tasks we did was installing a 65,000 btu woodstove. I can not tell you what this stove has meant to me operating now for 25 years giving warmth and comfort. However, it has always bothered me that I had to leave a 2 inch airspace between the insulated portion of the flu pipe and my roof. It has been a constant issue outside as it has been melting the snow on my roof roughly 2 feet around my chimney, not to mention the loss of heat from my house even with the trim collar installed. Well, turns out you do NOT need the airspace if you fill it with the right material: rock wool. It has an ignition point of 2000 degrees! Needless to say, the insulated pipe comes nowhere near that temperature. As a matter of fact, when installing this insulation, my fireplace was operating and I could touch the insulated portion with no problem whatsoever. Because I did not properly research this, I have literally lost millions of btu over 25 years! My bad for sure!
