His Rockefeller Institute was one of the leading medical research organizations in America, and connected the dots between the stereotyping of American southerners as slow and stupid and nearly universal hookworm infections in the South. They were laughed at at the time, but there was a 50 cent cure for hookworm, which they helped spread throughout the South, and the rates of "imbecility" in the South practically disappeared overnight

Thats the real difficult thing with abusers. Like how much are you blaming them or how they were raised? The first few years of your life are so critical that if screwed up by your parents can absolutely break you as a human being, and ruin your entire life. This is why often criminals, abusers and stuff are often raised in horrible conditions by horrible people, who were also in turn raised by evil people who were in turn raised by evil people, going back generations and generations. Its generational trauma, and it has this unseen effect on people.
