I have to say, your remote controlled models of boats and ships are pretty cool. My favorites are your aircraft carrier and steam tugboat models you've made. And that got me thinking: what if you were to make a model of a fictional watercraft? One I had in mind is the Sea Train from an anime show called One Piece. They are shown in a part of the show known as the Water 7 Saga, and what they are is that they are steam trains that can run on water like a ship. They're pretty cool. In fact, there are two known sea trains in the saga, one called Puffing Tom and the other called Rocket Man. Imagine trying to make a remote controlled model of that. I'm sure that would be quite a challenge.

+Tealuv Props Wiring diagrams / directions are usually furnished with electronic speed controls when you buy them; everything is usually pretty much 'plug and play'. We did a little customizing with the battery set up to get longer run time. Ballast is not too complicated, mostly trial and error. Keep it as low as possible and don't make it immovable, you may want to add or change equipment within the boat.

I really want to know how to make one of those but I don't know where to start What kind of wood is used for the hull and deck ? And what the heck is bondo putty ? HELP!?!!?!! ADVICE?!??!
@Rapidnadion
7 жыл бұрын
Hayden, hull, deck and superstructure are all constructed from inexpensive plywood sheet of 1/8th or so thickness that you can find at Home Depot etc. Bondo is just a 2-part auto body filler which works well for forming curved areas and filling voids.

Rapidnadion Quick question before you put the putty on how did you bend the wood on the bow
@PortCharmers
7 жыл бұрын
Although the question is not addressed to me i still feel like adding something: If the Wood is too stiff to bend, you can try softening it up with hot water. This melts the glue and lets the individual plies move against each other. Then clamp it into bent shape and let it cool and dry again. Then it should stay in shape. But give this method a try before on some scrap wood. And beward of cheap plywood, which may totally disintegrate when it Comes in contact with hot water. When gluing the planks to the frames, I usually use clamps to hold it in place until the glue sets. You can glue a strip of wood across the front end of the plank to keep the clamp at the very end from slipping off. This piece is later cut and sanded off.

I have a question: how do you measure displacement of a ship?
@Rapidnadion
3 жыл бұрын
We figure out the volume of the part of the ship that is underwater, and compare that to the density of sea water, which is 64 Lbs./ cubic foot. There are 1728 cu. in. In a cu. ft. If we calculate the volume to be, say, 432 ci. in. which is one quarter of 1728, then our model should weigh one quarter of 64 Lbs., or 16 Lbs. Thanks for watching.

Me and a friend are building RC boats. I am planning to start with a guided missile destroyer (with facilities for a helicopter). I would like to know what a good motor/ esc/ battery combination would be. The vessel will not be very large.
@Rapidnadion
6 жыл бұрын
For maneuverability and realism we chose to go with a twin-screw installation, although a single would have been enough for scale speeds. We used 'off the shelf' 12V motors, Hyperion 2s/7.4V 25C 5000mAh batteries, mtronics marine 15 esc's and a Tactic 4 ch radio. Good luck with your build and thanks for your interest. RN

What are potential ways to avoid propeller shaft leaks. This is quite a hot topic as the new British aircraft carrier has a leaky shaft. Also, I don`t have the facilities to turn universal joints. What would be a good way to overcome this? Thanks once again
@Rapidnadion
6 жыл бұрын
The fit between the propeller shaft and its tube should be a close fit, and use a light oil. Generally in small models the shaft is only below the water's surface a few inches so there's not a lot of pressure at that shallow depth to encourage leaks, same goes for the rudder. If you can get the motor / shaft alignment straight or nearly so, silicone tubing can be used as a U-joint in some models with small drive motors.
@challengeaccepted9353
6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your assistance. There is just one thing I would like to sort out. In a book I was reading, it said you had to use washers to prevent the thrust of the motor being spent on the motor bearings. Is this still an issue?

They're too high performance for this model, it goes faster than scale with these motors which are 1/3 the price. Also, motors and batteries stay cool under low loads. The Kitty Hawk's motors are rated for 32 v but we only run them on 12. Long run times at scale speeds.
