This video is taken during the 2017 rocket mass heater workshop jamboree. We had the top five rocket mass heater innovators on site: Erica Wisner, Ernie Wisner, Peter van den Berg, Kirk "Donkey" Mobert and Chris "Uncle Mud" McClellan.
This is part of a series of addressing some rocket mass heater myths. We found a set of myths on the internet posted by a woman that states that she is "an engineer who consults on building energy efficiency."
For this video we address her statement "Used well, a rocket mass heater can be more efficient than a modern wood stove, but only 10% at most, in my opinion."
As part of her position, she says that her reactions are based on the claims made in my article here:

In that article, the very first statement I make is "heat your home with 80% to 90% less wood."
Erica Wisner starts off this video by pointing out that conventional wood stoves are required to put 350 degrees F, or more, up the chimney. And that since it is an all day burn, then you are putting a LOT of heat outside throughout the day.
I then point out that when a conventional wood stove claims to be 75% efficient, it is actually 64% efficient. The government allows them to bump the number by 16% to allow for heat going up the chimney.
Kirk Mobert explores the two types of efficiency: converting wood to heat, and heating people.
Peter van den Berg questions where the 75% figure comes from.
Erica points out how conductive heat is far more efficient at heating people than convective heat.
I bring up the point of how most people will run a 75% wood stove at 3% efficiency through the night.
Eric suggests that most people get negative efficiency from a conventional wood stove when the fire goes out and the dampers are left open. The warm air in the house is sucked out and put outside.
Kirk points out that the efficiency numbers come from the best test of many, using kiln dried wood, and working hard to get the best possible numbers. And then he points out the numbers that Peter and several others have published which average about 93% efficient for rocket mass heates.
Kirk disputes the validity of her claim. Erica says it is comparing apples to oranges. I suggest that the claim is rooted in my claim of how a rocket mass heater will heat your home with one tenth the wood. If you try to compare that to the wood stove's claim of 75% efficiency, then one could choose to misinterpret things to say that I am claiming that a rocket mass heater runs at 750% efficiency, when it is not possible to go beyond 100% efficiency.
