In this episode of Solomon's Vegas Adventures, Solomon, Aaron, Lacey, and Sergio rockhounded at and explored the Columbia Mine- an abandoned mine located near Goodsprings, about 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas. The crew found an extensive amount of Copper and Copper minerals, as well as Cobalt and Cobalt minerals.
Though I did say I would never explore another abandoned mine, I went against that today... however, I only went about 30 feet in and did not go past the junction of the main adit. I surveyed the area extensively and researched it, and I deemed the section of the mine I explored as safe enough for me to feel comfortable going in. Furthermore, the mineralization is extensive and abundant in this mine. Within literally 2 feet of entering the portal, there was a gorgeous vein of copper that went down the entirety of the mine. This copper vein followed the contact between the older Bird Spring Limestone unit and a much younger granite porphyry (of Miocene to Eocene age). In the copper vein, there was extensive Cobalt deposition with lots of Iron as well.
Geologically, the Columbia Mine follows the contact between a Granite Porphyry and Limestone unit. The mineralization of Copper and Cobalt occurs along this contact. The footwall of the mine is Limestone and the hanging wall Granite Porphyry. Columbia Mine is one of the few localities in the United States with excellent Cobalt mineralization and deposition, and the area has been studied recently by New World Inc, a mining company interested in re-opening several of the abandoned mines in Goodsprings to exploit Copper, and more importantly, Cobalt. There was a string that led into the mine, and we believe that string was from New World Inc.'s 2018 study of the Columbia Mine.
The structural integrity of the mine is actually quite sturdy. Unlike the Gold Ace Mine, this mine is sturdy and does not seem as if collapse is imminent anytime soon. Perhaps this is one of the factors to New World wanting to purchase and re-open several abandoned mines near Goodsprings.
If you're interested in rockhounding gorgeous copper minerals like Azurite, Malachite, and Chrysocolla, this is a wonderful spot to do so. Moreover, there is luckily no Uranium present here! If you come out to the Columbia Mine, exercise extreme caution while exploring. The site to rockhound is located near the top of the mountain on the left side of the wash.
