This is one of the coolest ideas for a 'travel guitar' I've ever seen. And I do think it's a travel guitar because I can't see most players using it in place of their best instruments when that is convenient to do. I could be wrong, I suppose - but I'd only know if I had the opportunity to play one. Anyway, thanks for the demo, Darrell.

Nice guitar! I have 2 comments. 1) around 10:25 in the sound demos, you can clearly hear the trem springs resonating when you choke off the sound. That's easily fixed by putting some foam in the trem spring, but worth noting for your viewers. 2) I wish you had tested the trem - with the locking strings at the headstock, I bet this guitar is a diving machine.

I had a Chinese headless with the same bridge for a while. I hated the need to use an Allen key to tune, and I did not find the tuning sensitivity to be very good. Of course, it could be that your model has a similar design but better parts. I ended up selling it and buying a Spirit by Steinberger. Much better tuning/trem design IMO. Originally it required double ball end strings, but I bought a replacement end for the "headstock" that allows you to clamp strings so you can use normal strings. And it fits in my suitcase :). Are they active PU? Not so sure I like the idea of a guitar that can't make any sound without recharging. 9V batteries would be preferred because you can change them in a flash.

As others have mentioned, this company also makes the guitars for the Jamstik Studio guitar. That has a standard body, headless, with midi output either through cord or Bluetooth. Fixed bridge. Dual humbuckers. Same little crank for tuning (I immediately got a tee-handle Allen wrench - much easier to use). Even without the foldaway body, it’s still pretty small. This guitar with an iPad or iPhone is all you need for a minimalist setup. If you want a chance to play with a midi guitar, this is nice since it doesn’t need a guitar synth pedal to make it work. Overall a nice unit. Needed a little set up upon arrival. Bridge and midi pickup height needed to be adjusted. And the string height at the pickup end of the fret-board seems a little high. About the same price range as the reviewed guitar. It’s still relatively new to me, but I’ve enjoyed it. We’ll see how well it holds up over time.

Thanks for the demo. After watching your video, I ordered mine a few weeks ago.... I was not expecting a toy (due to the price tag), but rather a usefull tool in order to play during my holydays and travels.... instead I got a REAL GIGABLE GUITAR, very well engineered and manufactured. A lot of thoughts were put into designing this gear. Mine is a special version in satin black. The sounds are very good, it'as a very versatile guitar. My only complain is the lower strap button location, too close to the folding mecanism, preventing me to use my strap. The bridge seems very well designed, but I would have liked to have a manual written in ENGLISH ! luckily there are some vids on you tube, teaching you how to tweak the thing. The guitar is rather heavy, due to his small size, but it is very comfortable to play and the gigbag (made by Music Area ?) is of high quality. A very good buy !

The strings were really high as delivered, but for someone unfamiliar with setting up a guitar, this was VERY easy and within 20 minutes, it played really well. Very good but “neutral” tone and even without using effects, playing it through four of my amps and straight through the PA, it sounded slightly different, no surprise there. I didn’t need to bring a regular guitar amp since this sounds great through the PA. Thanks for your review…I use this semi regularly now.

It’s a cool idea, but there are some features that turn me off. I would like to see a thicker neck and tuning keys that are adjustable without a crank. I don’t like floating tremolos or guitars with middle pickups. The middle pickup always gets in the way of my picking hand. I have a Kiesel HH2 with a fixed bridge. I got it chambered, so it only weighs 4 pounds. The tuning keys are hand adjustable. The downside compared to this guitar is that it costs about 2.5 times as much. The base model is $1300, but you’re realistically looking at a price of at least $1700 by the time you spec it out. I travel with my HH2 all the time, and it fits perfectly into any overhead bin. I play it through a Fractal FM3, I usually use headphones, but I carry a pair of JBL Clip speakers with me so I can play it in stereo if I want to play it so other people can hear it.

I have a 'Silent Guitar' from Yamaha, and the sound is amazing - altough, on a sad note, I keep having to adjust the peg screws so the upper frame doesn't wobble or detach accidentally with use. But it's a ten minute adjustment, so no worries. This guitar doesn't seem to have the same problem, as the frame comes fully attached. (YAY!!) Besides, it's a fully electric model! (For those not in the know, the Silent Guitar is a piezo-electric) And headless!! (The Silent Guitar isn't) And you can store your own picks in a small drawer!?? (The Silent Guitar doesn't have any of that) And with a headphone jack for when you want to play silently!?? (No, at least that the Silent Guitar does have, but it's definetely one of the trademarks of a travel guitar) Full points for the review, but there is that one tidbit that makes me disagree with you, Darrell. As the saying goes: if it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it is probably a duck. It applies really well here, and all points scream to me that this is a travel guitar.

You should use the same pickup in this guitar and a full size guitar, and do a blind sound test. Tone wood snobs could be surprised I’ll bet.

If it had a small term, I bet Allan holdsworth would be looking down at this thing and saying "damn, that is exactly what I wanted but never found". It's just sublime.

Hey Darrell, did it rattle for you on that extruding bottom part? I loved everything but had to return mine because of this. Thanks!

Hi Darrell, I like that ALP. I'm looking for a traveller guitar, how about you do a shoot out of say headless, ALP, Steinberger, a cheap China knock-off (if such a thing exists) and then travellers with headstocks like Hofner maybe? Thanks, Mark

Hmm, the headphone-out could make a second output, to go to a second amp, or to have an extra-clean sound like a piezo, that you can mix with the signal of the output jack. If the headphone-out does not "kill" the output, of course.
