Those videos were every bit as historic in my mind as Woodstock! I was a little kid, and it was the first time I ever saw the Who and I was BLOWN AWAY---and the song wasn't even one of the better ones as I later found out ("Sister Disco"). First time I ever saw Robert Plant and I thought Rockpile was great---and there was ROCKESTRA! It looked 2,000 guitars playing on stage--and some of these guys I'd even seen from other videos (members of the Pretenders and Elvis Costello, etc) I thought that was the greatest band ever assembled! Give me a break--I was only 10 at the time--I still had a lot more to learn about rock and roll!
@luvbasses5487

@@impalaman9707 I felt much the same way - although I was a couple years older than you at the time. Like you, I recognized Bruce Thomas and James Honeyman Scott from Pretenders too. It was incredible to watch and hear. Queen we must admit stole the show on night three with their blistering set. In 1979 NOBODY could touch Queen. They were certainly at the peak of their powers by then.

MTV used to show this clip a lot back in the early days. The funny thing was, being as young as I was (about 9 years old), I didn't really know about Led Zeppelin (and my oldest brother didn't have any of their records), and MTV always had it chyroned simply as "Rockpile". So I didn't know who Robert Plant was, I just thought he was Rockpile's lead singer! Sounds ridiculous now, but it's the truth. This is how I first heard Robert Plant!
@ronalddarnell9677

I remember quite clearly that M-TV had it as Robert Plant and Rockpile and I was a huge (still am) Zeppelin fan and I rarely got lucky enough to see this. That might be because I hated all the other stuff (except for a few) that M-TV broadcasted. So I wasn't tuned in to the programming like many others. But I remember saying to myself "Hell yeah it's on again" and stopped whatever I was doing to sit and just be amazed about how good Plant was. I was still to young for the midnight movies to go see "The Song Remains the Same " so this was really my only look of Plant. And also remember ripping school to go to a friend's house to watch "Live Aid" for the Sabbath and the Zeppelin getting back together. I was disappointed at the Great and Mighty Led Zeppelin performance. Sabbath rocked theirs.
@Kohntarkosz
2 жыл бұрын
@@ronalddarnell9677 That must have been later on that they changed the chyron to include Plant's name, because I'm sure early on it was just given as "Rockpile". Either way, at the time, I was 9 years old, and Led Zeppelin were not one of the band's that my oldest brother (who had turned me Kiss, Queen< Uriah Heep, Frampton, Bowie, etc) had in his collection, so I probably wouldn't have known who Robert Plant was even if the chyron was correct from the get go.

@@Kohntarkosz not too bad of a collection of music. I could do without the Queen but back then I loved them. And they are a good band. Freddy can sure sing. And Brian has a sound all his own. But the radio and the sports games just drove it in the ground. I was lucky, I think, my oldest brother was 16 when he made the trek to Yasgur's Farm in Bethel NY. And the brother down from him was burning Draft Cards in DC at the National Mall. Plus 2 more brothers under him but up from me. But the oldest for my 10th birthday bought me live Cream and Waiting for the sun from the Doors. And that Christmas his wife got me "The Song Remains the Same " live Zeppelin. But some hand-me-downs I remember included Black Sabbath first . And Masters of Reality, and also Parinoid. The Who's Tommy and Quadraphina . Beatles Rubder Soul and Sgt Peppers also Abby Road. I can remember stacks of 45s one was Day Tripoer forget the other side. And another was Pinball Wizard . I was blessed with great music at a young age. Had some peers that were into the same. And they were floored by the LPS I had. 1 got pissed cause I was still younger maybe 13 and he picked me up (just got his license) but went to a hole in the wall record shop and I picked up a Dark Side of the Moon picture disk, that the cover opened up like a double album. It wasn't. But it was in the like clearance section and I paid a whole 49 cents + tax. Man I wish I still had some of those originals. I like the nostalgia of the 60s and 70s rock era. So it would have to be some stupid number if I was to sell any. I collected a lot of concert memorabilia and boot legs. Some of that shit today would be worth a mint I bet. Well have a great day and would love to hear more
