I MET GUYS WHO SAW MARCIANO FIGHT AT RING SIDE AND I WAS TOLD THAT HE WOULD LITERALLY LIFT HIS OPPONENT OFF THE CANVAS WITH BODY SHOTS

Arm blows too. After awhile the opponent couldn't lift their arms to defend or throw real punches. Ali said after an exhibition with Rocky when he was only punching 1/4 effort that his arms were sore for a week...

@Mike C Please. Ernie Shavers would have left Marciano flat on the canvas like a rug. Marciano's power was nothing compared to Shavers. And Liston would have done the same thing. Good reason why Marciano retired. And don't even think about beating Ali. Marciano was far too slow to even touch Ali in his prime, and don't give me any crap about those staged computer matches because they proved nothing (Ali won one and Marciano won one). Look how slow he throws his punches and how open he was to every counter Matthews hit him with. No way this guys beats Ali...

ddland45 Another Marciano disser. Marciano could generate tremendous power in a shorter distance than most fighters. He had to because of his short 68' reach. Shavers had tremendous power as well. One of my favorite HWs, btw. Marciano had a granite chin and stamina for days. Shavers, not so much. Shavers would get KTFO if he got hit with these left hooks. PERIOD. So would Liston, and for sure the draft dodging Ali. I tell my fight buddies this all the time: Ali's sweet jab and speed would help him win against Marciano on points, or if Marciano bled profusely (which he was prone to) to where the fight got stopped. Marciano would outlast Ali (would tire first) in a long fight [slow starter but stamina for days], or if he slipped inside for that hook or his Suzie Q punch. Marciano had power in BOTH hands. Ali wouldn't use his Rope-A-DOPE against Marciano if he was smart. 1) Marciano had unsurpassed stamina and Ali would tire before the Rock 2) Marciano broke bones in the arms of fighters who blocked his punches. Ended careers because of it. It would be no different against Ali if he tried his Rope-A-DOPE. It worked against Foreman, Frazier, Norton, and many other 70's HWs, but wouldn't against the Rock.

rocky didn#t do to much weight training, up to today he#s still seen as the best conditioned heavyweight of all time. he jogged everyday about 5 miles, up t0 15 before a fight, even 7 on christmas morning. he trained with 300 LB bags which made his from nature rockhard punch even harder, transforiming it into Suzie Q. he didn#t only hurt you when he hit you, he also hurt you when you hit him, many of his opponents, including joe, said it was like hitting a brickwall, even bumping into him hurt.

Yes....And people also say that Joe Louis fought a lot of "Bums". The same way that Usain Bolt raced a lot of slow folks. Rocky was a freaking pit bull with unlimited power in both hands, unlimited endurance, a concrete and steel jaw, and as much courage and determination as any boxer who stepped in a ring. The math is frightening......no matter what the tape measure or scale says.

the heart valve (if you knew anything) had nothing to do with steroid use. He had that problem since his yound adulthook. Its a genetic problem. None of those bodybuilders you mentioned have any problems related to steroids. anyway, back to boxing...it basically started from the 60's man..thats when things started going into steroids in other sports...look at the physiques of guys like Liston, Foreman, Ali, Chuvalo etc. Thsoe guys were taking steroids just like all of them do today

Rocky Marciano would be compable in size, strength and style to Joe Frazier. In his prime, Frazier was destroyed twice by George Foreman. Unless Marciano would have caught Foreman sleeping, I don't think he would have had a chance against a prime George Foreman.

True, Marciano was a tough as they came; we may never know if he would have beat a prime George Foreman - look at what a much smaller Jack Dempsey did to Jess Willard! Marciano however, never faced a powerful super heavyweight, like Foreman. Ken Norton, Frazier, Cooney, Shavers, etc., were the toughest in their era and we saw the end results.

How could anyone say Rocky would beat Ali, Holmes, Frazier, Foreman. He might have a chance with little heavies like Holyfield, Spinks, but not a real heavy. He was a product of his times. These old fighter couldn't beat the fighters of the 60's, 70's and 80's. Different styles and different times would dictate that they would be dominated. He was a great figher, but in terms of all-time great heavyweights, I don't think he's in the top 5 of: Ali Tyson Holmes Louis Frazier Lewis

That's some scary stuff. It looked like Rocky killed him. Rocky's power just came flying out at opponents from ridiculous angles. He might throw and miss 99 punches in a row....but the 100th hits and it's lights out. Check out the punch that Rocky hits Joe Louis with just at the end of the first round. Rocky has Joe up against the ropes, backs out of a clinch, gets hit with a Joe Louis left, then Rocky leaps right back into Joe with a right hand that turns Joe's legs to jelly. If that would have happened at the 1:30 point of the round, then it would have probably been all over. Watch that first punch that Rocky floors Archie Moore with. It looks like Moore's head almost leaves his body. Then Moore ( one of Boxing's true geniuses) avoids a blizzard of Marciano punches, using some of the best defensive rolls in the history of boxing, until......Boom! Moore proved that he was also one of the toughest men ever to box. Rocky was just in meat grinder mode by then. There was no way for Archie to escape. Marciano boxed like a duck hunter with Thompson Machine gun. A thousand shots fired, one hits the duck, and there's not much left of the bird when it hits the ground.

Rocky didnt miss many of those punches when in close and his opponent forced to the ropes. Alot of those power punches were Piercing body punches that cannot be overlooked. In the Joe fight he wrestled him to the ropes landing some nice shots, Then the steel beam left hook came after a slip inside. Two sharp left uppercuts landed home before i demolishing right hand the drove Louis through the ropes. Joe said Marciano was the hardest puncher he had ever fought

@@static9061 - I often wonder about how things are perceived, as opposed to how things really are. I hear so much about Rocky's supposed clumsiness and lack of accuracy, BUT....how much of what Rocky did actually a clever and well thought out fight plan? I just got through watching a very accurate Floyd Patterson get eaten alive by and equally accurate Ali. Floyd just stood outside, waited, and tried to land the clean punch...and Ali ate him alive. I see much of what Rocky did as forcing the opening instead of waiting for the opening. This also kept his opponent busy on defense, never allowing his opponent space or time to mount a cohesive offense. For a man with a glass jaw like Patterson, or with dubious endurance like Liston, this tactic that Marciano used would be suicide. However, Marciano had three things that he used to his great advantage - Concrete Jaw, Endless Endurance, and Awesome power in both hands. Courage, too...he seemed to not give a rat's ass if he got injured or not. Put all these things together, and who wouldn't use Rocky's same tactics? I see a hell of an athlete when Rocky missed that left hand against Ezzard Charles, shifted his weight , and then threw a monster knockdown right hand. There aren't too may boxers who can completely whiff on an all- out power punch, and then collect themselves for another power punch, in one smooth movement. That was just amazing to my eyes.

@@wileycousins9698 Marciano was a hell of an athlete . All the feints, using his defensive momentum into great power punching. Mike Tyson used to watch alot of Marciano coming up as a fighter and so did I. My favorite knock outs are probably when he drove louis and lastarza through the ropes with mortal kombat like uppercuts and the ol double left hook on Moore winding up for another big right as he was falling to the canvas. That miss into right hand was beautiful, something like a MLB pitcher.

@@static9061 Here's a question that I could never figure out the answer to. Sometimes the fighter seems to know far more than the trainers. Case in point - Ali's "Rope a Dope" against Foreman. Angelo Dundee was having a heart attack in the corner when Ali stood there in front of Foreman and let him swing away. Despite Dundee's pleas, Ali had figured out the one sliver of a key to victory....which most people at that time would have thought insane. Ali won by doing things his way. So Marciano was called awkward by everyone and their brother. I just don't see it. After studying boxer after boxer after boxer, they usually have a certain caution to them - playing a game of chess until they find openings. This caution makes them look self contained and graceful. Rocky knew that he would lose a game of tactical chess because - lacking the ability to jab with his short arms - he needed knockouts to win. As far as I see it, Rocky developed his own absolutely unique style that went against almost every single convention. My question; Do you think that it was because the boxing world couldn't understand Marciano's own home-made style that they ridiculed him? I was watching Frazier and Ali 3 for the hundredth time yesterday, and Frazier would get Ali on the ropes and then probe for openings. Whenever I see Marciano get someone on the ropes, he just goes all out assault, using punches to move arms out of the way, and then following up with punches in every possible angle. He doesn't probe for openings; he creates openings. I find that amazing...and absolutely unique. Would Frazier have been able to do that if he had Marciano's chin and power in both hands? After all, All of Marciano's tactics were made possible because he knew he couldn't be seriously hurt. When he had an opponent on the ropes, he was not interested in protecting himself. That last series with Joe Louis was incredible for its sheer violence. Just an amazing human being was Marciano.
