What the kid didn't get, and the one thing Rocky didn't say was that it's irrelevant whether Donnie can win the fight. The points is that even when winning, there is still great loss. Rocky won the fight with Drago. But what good was the win years later? There is no such thing as "avenging" someone in the ring. After beating Drago, Apollo is still dead, he still has the guilt from the death, and his mind and body have never recovered. THAT is the point.

Rocky has always had communication problems. He’s wise, yet still stumbles with articulating himself. @@ej03947 Because it’s the truth. At this point, there was no way Donnie could beat Viktor. Strength and power runs deep in that family. That power was what killed Donnie’s dad Apollo. And Viktor might be even stronger than his own dad was in his prime. Donnie is being impulsive and reckless by rushing into this fight with no real idea of what this guy can do, which is exactly what Apollo did when he stepped in the ring with Drago. Rocky knows how that story ends before it even begins because he lived it. It’s important for Donnie to realize that.

Rocky’s sigh said volumes- and showed how far he came from 1979, when he felt he HAD to fight Apollo again, even when both Mickey and Adrian told him HE had nothing to prove. Stallone shows the weariness and the hard earned knowledge and experience of Rocky , and the pain that never healed from Apollo’s death. He knows how this is probably going to go, and he doesn’t want to be in the same situation with the son that he was with the father. Rocky couldn’t win with Apollo there- if he threw the towel, Apollo might have lived but he would have hated him. He doesn’t throw it and Apollo died. Did t matter that that was what Apollo wanted and told him so. Rocky had to live with it, still was living with it when his son came to him to train him. To possibly have to do that again? I don’t blame Rocky, because I wouldn’t do it either

Hell yea he broke things that never been fixed, Ivan and Rocky went into a 80s style Fist of the North Star slugfest But yet again a few months later, Tommy Gunn and Rocky had a street fight

Just like his father, D's ego got the best of him. Rocky already got revenge for Apollo, there is not reason D should do it..again. I understand how they both feel. But Rocky didn't want to relive this again.

Rocky didn't want Donnie to fight Viktor Drago because he was afraid Donnie would get killed just like Apollo in Rocky IV. Rocky also felt extreme guilt for his part in Apollo's death by not throwing in the towel which could have saved Donnie's dad's life.

They both lost. Rocky took mental damage and appeared to be going downhill from there e.g. losing millions, falling for deception (Tommy), cancer, death of Adrian, etc. Ivan lost his wife, contry, respect and essentially lived the life equivalent to a stray dog. Although both Drago and Rocky at least had their sons and both of their lives were effected by their fathers.

I dont think Rocky personally believes this because he still feels guilty over Apollo dying and he hasn't thought of Drago in decades but right here he could've made the point to Adonis that he already avenged Apollo and sent Drago to the streets
