Stephen King said that the Rod Serling's Night Gallery episode entitled "The Caterpillar," 'is one of the most frightening ever telecast on TV.' In this video, horror director Guillermo del Toro, "Caterpillar" director Jeannot Szwarc, and star Joanna Pettet explore one of the scariest episodes of Rod Serling's Night Gallery, with Jim Benson, TV Time Machine host, and co-author (with Scott Skelton) of Rod Serling's Night Gallery: An After-Hours Tour (available at: www.nightgallery.net).
Aired March 1, 1972, on the NBC television network, the raw, torturous horror of "The Caterpillar," was a rarity for 1970s television. Also unusual was the cast, featuring feature film actors who rarely graced the small screen: Laurence Harvey (The Manchurian Candidate), Joanna Pettet (Casino Royale), and John Williams (Dial M For Murder).
Written by Rod Serling and directed by Jeannot Szwarc (Somewhere in Time, Jaws 2), "The Caterpillar" tells the story of a man whose assassination plot involving a deadly earwig-type insect goes horribly wrong.
The best remembered of all the episodes of Rod Serling's Night Gallery which aired from 1970-1973, "The Caterpillar" made its imprint on a generation of filmmakers (including Guillermo del Toro) and its influence can be seen in a number of films: Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan, Creepshow, and So I Married An Axe Murderer: "I'm sorry--but I have an ear thing, OK? There was an episode of Night Gallery and this guy put an earwig in this guy's ear..."
