@@liamjpbrady And completely wrong and in my view disrespectful to the executed of 1916, what they stood for, who they fought against and full of incorrect supposed "facts" (in fact they are so wrong it would be laughable if it wasn't so bad) so you must also be completely devoid of knowledge around the Easter Rising and the aftermath and obviously not understand the irony of this spectacle and how offensive it is to people like me who absolutely love and adore these brave men and women. Look at James Connolly's last statement and if you still don't get it, there is no hope for you on the subject I'm afraid.

And that he got most of the details wrong. Grace was 28 years old when she married and was 67 years old when she died in 1955. She would have been 81 years old in 1969 had she lived until then and not many people born in 1888 like she was, did so. Joseph was 29 years old when they married and so was a year older than her, rather than the other way around.

As an immensely proud Irish-American, Grace is one of my dearest songs, taught it to my children (My daughter's middle name is Grace) as toddlers. Together as a family we traveled to Ireland and Northern Ireland and learned and walked the grounds of the GPO and Kilmainham Goal, me as a grand-child and namesake for a 1916 Uprising Survivor and my children, my son is also a namesake of his great grandfather. Fast forward to 2016 my son a Sgt. in the United States Marines Corps attended the 100th Anniversary celebration of the uprising as a member of then Vice-President Biden's security detail, walking the street toting a gun just like his Great Grandfather that day in 2016. I still get chills when I hear this song and yes I do tear up.

Here are the lyrics of the full song. As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Jail I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed? From our school days they have told us we must yearn for liberty Yet all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love I place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now I know it's hard for you my love to ever understand The love I bare for these brave men, the love for my dear land But when Pádraic called me to his side down in the GPO I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye Now as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking too On this May morn as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know I loved so much that I could see his blood upon the rose Oh, Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger They'll take me out at dawn and I will die With all my love I'll place this wedding ring upon your finger There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye For we must say goodbye

Rod heard the celtic fans singing this song at a cup final and fell in love with it and wanted to record it. But before he recorded the song he wanted to know more about it so he came to Ireland and visited kilmainham gaol and some of the other 1916 rising sites. According to Muriel McAuley who commented below, Rod got some of his info wrong but we won't hold that against as he done such a beautiful job singing the song. R.I.P Joe and Grace and all of the 1916 rebels. God's curse on you england, you cruel-hearted monster, Your deeds they would shame, all the devils in hell.

Just an observation as Englishman who has studied the Easter Rising with an absolute passion for the past 35 years, have prayed by their gravesides at Abour Hill many, many times, attended the 100th anniversary at the GPO and have even written songs about these great men and women, I note you quote from the James Connolly's song, however, let's not forget also the words contained within Connolly's late statement before his execution, "We went out to break the connection between this country and the British Empire". Rod was very much part of my youth (happy days) and whilst as you say Rod got "most of his facts completly wrong" my only issue with Rod singing this song is the fact that Sir Rod is of course also a CBE (Commander of The British Empire), the medal of which carries an image of King George V (King at the time of the Rising) and also carries the words "For God and The Empire" an Empire the Rebels gave their lives fighting against to Free Their Country from British Rule. John Lennon famously of course returned his MBE to the Queen out of principle and the likes of David Bowie refused offers of both a CBE and a Knighthood and huge respect to them for doing that, perhaps Rod should consider doing the same thing "out of principle" if he is so sincere about the subject and those events of 1916.

@@Lissadell1916 I admire your passion for a subject i know you would have heard nothing about while you were in school. Would i be right in thinking there's an Irish connection somewhere in your family. [ I'd be very surprised if there's not ] As for Rod, i don't think he would be into the whole republican thing, i'd say for him it's more to the point that he's a mad Celtic supporter "and as i said earlier" he heard it being sung at a cup final and just wanted to know more about it. I have to say, in my book any English man that wants to know a bit more of what went on over here during those years is more than welcome because i have spoken to many lads from England during my life time and to no surprise they knew nothing of the history between out two countries.

@@garyconnolly4128 I am really surprised that Rod only seems to have gained knowledge of the Easter Rising in recent years as his very early music and career (and that of his contemporaries) was actively promoted by the grandson of one of the bravest and most honourable of the 1916 Rebels and martyr's of course (and one of my personal hero's), the same grandson also having a massive impact on British youth culture in the 60's and 70's. I also had the privilege of chatting to his other grandson at the 100th anniversary outside the GPO.

For me it's about the song and the two people who the song is, about!! Irish history is written in song and this one is exceptionally great. It causes a tear every time.. Rebels we will always be until every corner of our land is free. England itself will always be in chains until Ireland is in bondage no more..

Well if the English had a referendum to leave irland and Scotland The English would let you stand on your own 2 feet . we voted to leave uerope .you can see by comments English basterds etc the Irish poeple saying these things were not about at time of killing.unlike the English who in the 70s lost love ones . English poeple don't know what all the trouble is about they would give your country back with a vote and every one happy. They give Scottish a vote to leave they don't give the English a vote to leave Scottish. Hopefully we be split in to our own country s and peace and recentment gone
