These lyrics were written closer to the execution of the actual Roddy McCorley, in 1800. Frank Harte and Dónal Lunny perform this version of the song on their 1798 album, but to a completely different tune than the one we normally associate with ‘Roddy McCorley’.
The most well-known song about Roddy McCorley was written by the Ballymena lady, Ethna Carbery, during the 1898 centenary celebrations for the United Irish rising.
The tune that Carbery’s lyrics are put to is the one most well-known.
But, in musing over it myself I found Carbery’s tune matches just as well with the 1800 lyrics as it does with her own! So, I put them together.
This is a very rough recording, so I apologise!
